A German tourist has lost 22,000 baht after falling victim to a hair regrowth scam on Pattaya Beach Road, highlighting an ongoing problem affecting visitors in one of Thailand’s busiest resort areas. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 25, 2025, and was formally reported to Pattaya City Police later that morning. The case has renewed attention on long-running confidence scams that target foreign tourists through casual conversation.

According to police, Mr. Yilmaz Yuezbazi, a 57-year-old German engineer, filed a complaint at Pattaya City Police Station at 12:30 AM on December 25, 2025. He reported the incident to Police Lieutenant Colonel Sutheepan Thapsri with the help of an interpreter. Mr. Yuezbazi said he was walking near Soi 13/2 on Pattaya Beach Road when he was approached by a foreign man who initiated a friendly discussion.

The stranger gradually steered the conversation towards health and hair loss, claiming that a particular herbal product had “miracle” properties capable of regrowing hair on completely bald heads. Trusting the claims, Mr. Yuezbazi agreed to purchase the product. He was then escorted to a nearby herbal shop, where he paid 22,000 baht for two jars of the remedy.

After later examining the items, Mr. Yuezbazi realised the products were overpriced and likely ineffective. Concluding that he had been deceived, he decided to seek police assistance. He estimated the financial loss at approximately €600 and asked authorities to investigate the matter.

Local residents and business operators told police that similar scams are common in tourist-heavy areas of Pattaya. These schemes often involve groups of foreigners who strike up friendly conversations before directing victims to shops selling expensive herbal products with unverified claims. Police have previously acknowledged that while refunds have sometimes been arranged in comparable cases, the scams continue to reappear.

The case has prompted renewed calls for closer monitoring of known scam hotspots and stricter enforcement against organised groups involved in fraudulent sales. Police have advised tourists to remain cautious when approached by strangers offering health-related products or investment opportunities.

The Thaiger reported that Pattaya City Police are expected to review CCTV footage from the area around Soi 13/2 and liaise with relevant agencies to identify those involved. Officers have reiterated that tourists should report suspicious encounters immediately. The investigation remains ongoing, with no arrests announced at this stage.

Is that what the financial boys call a haircut?

I am surprised he got so far and lasted until the early hours with this much cash in his pocket. This scam needs quite gullible, and bald victims, yet is quite successful here....... are bald folks particularly dim?

Some people shouldn't go out alone

Even a German engineer with a Turkish name can be a stupid idiot.

Yep ,  he sure had a hair raising experience in Thailand that he can tell his mates about in the pub when he gets home.

I don't know about eloquent but I reckon if it was written by an elephant it would be easier to understand.

You have to laugh.

Simple logic states that if the shop really did have a cream which could cause hair to grow they would not  be selling it for a few quid in Pattaya, they would be selling it to wealthy people at £50,000 a treatment as the cream/balm would be worth more than gold.

Perhaps closing the scam shops might help.
