Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva announced a focused effort to win over undecided voters in the upcoming general election, set for February 8. Speaking during a campaign event in Bangkok's Constituency 3 with Apimuk Xanthavanij, Abhisit highlighted the importance of re-engaging voters through the party's past achievements and reforms.

The campaign trail started in Charoen Krung Soi 103, drawing a warm reception from residents and shop owners. Abhisit expressed optimism about the party's chances in Bangkok, citing long-standing ties, yet acknowledged the need for relentless effort in the final weeks before the vote. He reminisced about his political history in the area, referencing the influential role of Democrat politicians whose names start with "Api," including candidate Apimuk.

Some supporters shared fond memories of Abhisit's earlier campaigns, expressing joy at his political return. Although Abhisit refrained from predicting the number of seats the Democrats might secure, he observed growing warmth and support from voters. Notably, in the last election, the constituency saw Pheu Thai emerge victorious while the Democrat candidate trailed in third.

Voter feedback from other Bangkok precincts and positive poll results from Songkhla, where Democrat candidates led, bolstered Abhisit's optimism. Recalling past allegations of vote-buying that damaged parliamentary integrity, he urged the Election Commission to strengthen regulations for advance voting to prevent potential misuse.

Addressing nationalism during campaigning, Abhisit cautioned against exploiting national security issues for political gain and advocated instead for unity in matters of defence and foreign policy. He acknowledged the military's contributions but emphasised the complexities of the government's future foreign affairs roles, according to Thai PBS World.

Key Takeaways

  • Abhisit Vejjajiva campaigns to sway undecided voters in key Bangkok areas.

  • Urges stronger regulations for advance voting to prevent electoral abuse.

  • Stresses the need for unity on national security issues amid campaigning.

Wish them well, but unfortunately last time they were in the position of power they looked to be / seen to be dead in the water, no drive, no innovations, they need to get their act together and become a lot more aggressive to be effective.

Became PM in December of 2008 and did absolutely nothing but take the country backwards for just over 2 years. Had an opportunity to change things. Improve education and infrastructure, Nothing was done. He was the beginning of the end of the Democratic party. I have come to not trust the guy at all, right now he is into politics again for individual gain.

"...a focused effort to win over undecided voters..."

Seems that is what any and every politician with a functioning cortex would do. If voters are decided, then I suppose it would be a waste of resources to focus on them... whether fur ya or agin ya....

Good! Hopefully he reaches enough trust to be a major influence after the election.

Oh really - the murders of innocent civilians and others in 2010 (reference wikipedia)

The 2010 Thai political protests were a series of political protests that were organised by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) (also known as "Red Shirts")[3] in Bangkok, Thailand from 12 March–19 May 2010 against the Democrat Party-led government. The UDD called for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and hold elections earlier than the end of term elections scheduled in 2012. The UDD demanded that the government stand down, but negotiations to set an election date failed. The protests escalated into prolonged violent confrontations between the protesters and the military, and attempts to negotiate a ceasefire failed. More than 80 civilians and six soldiers were killed, and more than 2,100 injured by the time the military violently put down the protest on 19 May.

It didn't appear that he did much during the two years that he was in power, many say that the dinosaurs were very resistant to any progressive policy that he proposed. I don't know that for certain. But he's likely a better candidate than the rest of them who are super toxic, and everything needs to be done to keep the Thaksin spawn away from any seat of power.

Reasonable comment, and I agree they appeared dead in the water during their 2 year stint.

However, they would certainly be better than the alternate dinosaurs and drug runners proposed, but will need to get their act together in conjuction with the other younger guys running to sort out the mess and get the country heading in the right direction.
