A fire tore through a fresh market and adjoining homes in Phichit province on 4 January 2026, causing extensive damage estimated at 50 million baht and leaving two people injured. The blaze spread rapidly through tightly packed properties, destroying 10 connected shop-houses before firefighters brought it under control. Police detained a suspect for questioning amid allegations of deliberate ignition.

The fire broke out at about 10.15am at the fresh market in Khao Sai subdistrict, Moo 10, Thap Khlo district, Phichit. Police Lieutenant Chutidet Na Pikul of Thap Khlo Police Station received the report and alerted senior officers, while fire engines from Khao Sai municipality and neighbouring areas were dispatched. More than 30 fire engines were mobilised due to the scale of the incident.

On arrival, firefighters identified the source as an unnumbered house belonging to Ms Wanna, who operates a gas shop at the site. Fire crews faced significant difficulties accessing the area because the market is densely built and traffic congestion blocked initial entry routes. Narrow alleys, parked vehicles and goods stacked along walkways further delayed suppression efforts.

Once access routes were cleared, crews were able to tackle the flames, but not before severe damage occurred. Ten shop-houses, mostly commercial properties, were destroyed, with losses valued at approximately 50 million baht. Two people sustained injuries, though their conditions were not specified by authorities.

Police took Mr Yutthana, aged 37, the son of Ms Wanna, into custody as a suspect. Officers said local residents reported he may have caused the fire, alleging he had previously threatened his mother on several occasions. Investigators are questioning him to establish the exact cause and circumstances.

Deputy Governor of Phichit, Mr Kittiphon Wetchakul, attended the scene to oversee operations. He stated that the fire originated at the gas shop and confirmed that police had detained a suspect for investigation. He added that local congestion and restricted rear access, significantly hampered firefighting efforts.

Khoasod reported that provincial authorities coordinated fire engines from across Phichit to prevent further spread. Officials confirmed the fire was contained and prevented from reaching neighbouring units beyond the affected row. A full investigation into the cause and any criminal liability is ongoing.
