Just asking as I don't know anything about this.

In a similar situation: foreigner/tourist, accident/sudden illness, no insurance/cash in hand is hospitalized - will he be treated free of charge and discharged at zero cost? - in the developed world?

Yes, at least in my country. Of course they try to get the money back later. But they can't hold you in hospital till you pay. Btw. worst case, just apply asylum.

Where does the asylum come in?

So, similarly, can this Belgian Man claim asylum in Thailand as he cannot pay the bill?

The question I did answer was how it works in the developed world, not Thailand.

Thank you.

Right now I think there are more than enough people who were successful in gaining asylum there. Is Belgium still so very generous with granting asylum?

I am not from Belgium, so I have no idea. However the actual government is lead by a right wing party (in a coalition with some other). So I guess they start to be more strict now.

I wish someone would say EXACTLY where this crash occurred... can't make assumptions about right of way etc. from the tiny blurred video clip.

No, samui is all i know.

do we know he was riding illegally - I think a raft of measures would work including only legitimate renting of vehicles - this has already been mooted in Phuket.

I'm just saying, no license to ride a bike, that's riding illegally. Intoxicated, or under the influence of other drug/s, that's riding illegally. No helmet, that's illegal. Speeding, riding in a dangerous manner etc, that's illegal. No insurance company will pay out.

The only reason such a policy would be mooted in Phuket is because of the transport mafia there. They want extort every tourist for land transport.

Have a look at this article. It also has has video. This would was drunk and fell down one step. The travel insurance refused to pay the medical bills.

It's almost impossible to ake an intelligent comment about the crash itself without detailed information about where it happened.

Anyone who uses this in a comment should have their viewpoint immediately dismissed out of hand.

Why is that?

It's in the fine print of all the policies from all the travel insurance companies.

You're the kind of person who thinks a joke isn't funny until you've explained it – a specialist subject, the "bleedin' obvious".

Riding bikes here is a fool's errand.

I used to ride all over Thailand in the 2000s and 2010s. I had the proper kit (leathers, decent helmet etc) and the big bike, even got the Thai bike license (now expired). Time of my life, but I think I had a guardian angel watching me as I picked up minimal injuries. Seeing this poor lad just hits home how dicey it is. I always rode 9/10 like everyone was trying to hit me which probably helped.

Just fortunate and never one to set land-speed records whilst riding.

so your clue to Thailand's driving woes is speeding and your individual driving skills?

He had no license international or one from the beligum so he had to ride or drive careful.Had a accident and the travel insurance company will not cover as expected. The thai hospital system helped but he must pay alot, try in amercia no insurance no license you get nothing.

What does he expect please help but no money ,The begging bowl is his last chance salon and everyone will try it but it comes down to his family or he should have had a license and known better.Sorry the begging bowl has run it course for many now
