A pickup truck driver lost control and ploughed into dozens of parked motorcycles in Samut Prakan, damaging 30 vehicles and leaving the driver with minor injuries. The crash occurred at about 5.00pm on 7 January, on Suksawat Road, outbound towards the Phra Samut Chedi three-way junction, opposite Soi Suksawat 55 (Soi Amra), in Pak Khlong Bang Pla Kot, Phra Samut Chedi district.

Police from Phra Samut Chedi station were alerted and attended the scene, led by Pol Lt Col Sunthorn Phimphan, with traffic officers and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. The four-lane road’s leftmost lane beside the pavement was strewn with motorcycles piled together, some stacked into a mound-like heap, as company staff, owners and residents gathered.

Nearby, the pickup involved was a Mitsubishi Triton, registration from Chon Buri, found overturned on its left side and damaged. The driver sustained minor injuries and no other injuries were reported.

According to Ms Wilawan Inthanom, 50, a coffee vendor near the scene, she did not witness the moment of impact as she was occupied behind her stall. She said she heard loud braking followed by a crash, then saw the pickup overturned and the driver and passengers climbing out.

Ms Wilawan added that the motorcycles belonged to employees of a nearby printing and packaging company. She said the company normally instructs staff to park in a designated area, but the motorcycles involved were likely owned by new employees who were unaware of the rules or had parked there temporarily.

The driver, identified as Mr Thanee, 44, from Bang Krasop subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng district, told police he works as a steel structure contractor. He said he was driving home from a job in the Sukhumvit area with three colleagues and was not travelling fast.

Mr Thanee stated that he looked down to light a cigarette and, when he looked up, noticed the vehicle drifting left. He said he panicked, attempted to steer away and brake, but mistakenly pressed the accelerator, causing the pickup to sideswipe and collide with the parked motorcycles before overturning.

Naewna reported that police escorted Mr Thanee to Phra Samut Chedi police station for further questioning. Officers advised all affected motorcycle owners to file reports to pursue compensation and legal proceedings in accordance with the law.

At least he owned up rather than the usual “I fainted” or “I swerved to avoid a dog/Child/Elderly man”.

Seek compensation from whom?

Insurance companies (I wonder how many of the motorbikes were insured)?

The Pick-up driver (only if he was insured)?

It's always a huge mistake to hit the accelerator when you're trying to stop. This man affected of a lot of lives with one incredibly stupid mistake.

Maybe the writing is on the wall and he should give up cigarettes, or better yet maybe he should give up driving.

What an idiot. On his phone texting, more like.

He said he was driving home from a job in the Sukhumvit area with three colleagues and was not travelling fast.

Of course not!!
