Families of the victims killed in a crane accident in Nakhon Ratchasima will receive 1.69 million baht each, as announced by Governor Anupong Suksomnit. The compensation is comprised of contributions from the State Railway of Thailand, insurance, the Compensation for Victims and Defendants in Criminal Cases Act, and the contractor Italian-Thai Development Plc. Injured individuals will receive an initial 50,000 baht with the potential for additional compensation.

This announcement follows an emergency meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul involving key government departments and safety authorities to review construction safety standards and legal actions. The recent accident highlighted the need for stricter regulations as the government aims to address underlying issues in construction safety oversight. A concurrent crane collapse incident at Rama II Road added urgency to these discussions, claiming two lives and injuring two others.

Prof Amorn Pimanmas of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association emphasized the recurrent nature of such accidents in government projects and suggested comprehensive reforms. He outlined measures including suspending girder launcher cranes, independent investigations, strict penalties, regulation of subcontracting, and formal registration for cranes. These proposals aim to address systemic safety weaknesses and prevent future incidents.

Looking forward, the Department of Highways is tasked with assessing the damage and ensuring safe removal of the collapsed crane on Rama II Road. The government is expected to review and potentially implement the proposed safety reforms, with a focus on preventing similar tragedies. Enhanced oversight and stricter enforcement are anticipated as authorities seek to improve safety compliance in public construction projects, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Families of crane accident victims will receive 1.69 million baht each.

  • A safety overhaul is proposed following repeated crane collapses in government projects.

  • Further construction safety measures are being considered to prevent future incidents.

not very good right now. I wonder how many heads will roll for this incident?

How many heads rolled over a bus with an illegal CNG conversion that burnt all those kids and teachers to death?
