Applied for SSN Benefits

Featured Replies

Applied for SSN today online.

ssa.gov repeatedly timed out, would not connect.

Turned off adblockers, still no joy.

Managed to access using VPN via Japan.

Logged on with ID.me, security code sent to Thai SIM number.

Quick and easy process, took less than 30 minutes.

Application accepted with no document upload required.

Retirement benefits only, direct deposit to US credit union savings account.

"May" require copy of marriage certificate later, IF spouse benefits allowed.

Now pending review.

Received call from Manilla office today at noon to confirm info on application.

No additional info or documents requested.

Application will now be returned to Baltimore for processing.

A couple days later got an email that I had a message in my ss.gov account.

Tried to use ID.me to log in, dozens of times over several days. Got through the password check and the OPD code, but ss.gov would not connect.

Tried with ad blockers on/off, different browsers, different VPN's.

Was able to log in today without VPN using Firefox, with ad blockers running.

Just keep trying........

Message about status update received this morning, application approved! Will be receiving that sweet, sweet government cheese in my stateside account soon.

Signed on to ssn.gov with Firefox using adblockers on first attempt. ID.me sent OPD code to Thai sim number.

For those interested, it was possible to apply online with no supporting documentation requested, and only one 10-minute phone call from Manilla to confirm my information.

Total time from application (no spouse benefits) to approval was 3-1/2 weeks. Expecting a detailed approval letter in 8-10 days.
