Trump announces tariffs on the UK and other European countries

Featured Replies

Donald Trump has announced tariffs on the UK and other European countries for their opposition to a US takeover of Greenland.

The US president posted on Truth Social on Saturday that a 10 per cent tariff on all goods sent to the US would be imposed from Feb 1 on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, before being increased to 25 per cent on June 1.

He accused the countries of creating a “very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet” after they sent a small contingent of troops to Greenland to help Denmark prepare military exercises.

Trump to hit Britain with tariffs over Greenland

I can hear Putin and Xi chortling from here.

And they will tell the USA to go F itself. Let's see if Trump still has the power to play with tariffs once the SCOTUS decides the case. The Supreme Court is deliberating on the legality of Trump’s sweeping tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), including his tariffs imposed on China, Mexico and Canada and his separate “Liberation Day” tariffs on nearly all other nations.

At some point, people are going to say, enough is enough and just turn their backs on the USA. It will be interesting to see if Thailand lets US nationals continue to have the run of the house in Thailand.

SCOTUS seem to be delaying their verdict on the tariffs. Twice in the last month pundits have predicted the judges would issue a verdict, only for nothing to happen.

The public in all those European countries facing these tariffs should boycott US goods, cancel any planned trips to World Cup games in the US and just attend the games in Mexico and Canada.

How would you decide if a car that was produced in factories in Czech Republic, Spain, France, Poland and Germany -- as many cars are right now -- is actually a car from any specific country?

By the port that it is shipped out? By the headquarter location of the company (who will have dozens of national subisdiaries)? By the percentage of parts (whose sub-parts themselves will be sourced internationally)?

There are enough Americans on this forum jeering this idiot on. Which makes me wonder: is it right to be in an "alliance" with such people, or should we not leave the Americans alone, to stew in their own pot of war with the Chinese (which they will bring upon all of us within the decade, I am sure). Don't come calling then...

The loser in chief will soon be replaced. Americans are tired of being taxed because bully boy throws his toys out of the pram each time he doesn't get what he want.

Shortly after the midterm elections he will be removed by impeachment, because the democrats will take control again of house and senate, and several republicans will support the impeachment.

Forget tariff wars: The EU and Mercosur build one of the world's biggest free-trade zones

CAÑUELAS, Argentina (AP) — Talks on a landmark free trade deal between the European Union and four South American countries started so long ago that the euro wasn’t even in circulation, China hadn’t yet joined the World Trade Organization and Venezuela was still America’s top oil provider.

But against a starkly different geopolitical background and tough odds — including backlash from powerful protectionist lobbies — the EU and the South American alliance known as Mercosur are expected to formally sign their quarter-century-in-the-making trade pact this Saturday at a ceremony in Paraguay.

This is the first major trade agreement for Mercosur, which includes the region's two biggest economies, Brazil and Argentina, along with Paraguay and Uruguay. Bolivia, the newest member, was not involved in negotiations but can join the agreement in the coming years.

Canada's deal with China signals it is serious about shift from US

Carney told reporters on Friday that "the world has changed" in recent years, and the progress made with China sets Canada up "well for the new world order".

Canada's relationship with China, he added, had become "more predictable" than its relationship with the US under the Trump administration.

More Than 1,000 Companies Are Suing Trump Over His Tariffs

With the US Supreme Court poised to decide the fate of most of President Donald Trump’s tariffs as soon as Friday, hundreds of companies already are lined up hoping to recoup their share of the billions of dollars in duties paid so far.

After months on the sidelines, a flood of businesses spanning the global economy sued in the weeks since the justices signalled scepticism of Trump’s signature trade policy during a Nov. 5 hearing. More than 1,000 corporate entities are now involved in the legal fight, court records show, teeing up an unprecedented struggle over what happens next if the administration loses.

Tariff Lawsuits Skyrocket After Supreme Court Arguments

Publicly traded companies, including Costco Wholesale Corp., EssilorLuxottica SA, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., are among the stampede of companies suing for refunds. In the first days of 2026 alone, dozens of entities, including Dole Fresh Fruit Co., E.l.f. Cosmetics Inc. and J. Crew Group LLC, have sued.

Well, here we go. For once, we Europeans seem to have found our dangling bits and stand up to the bullying. Enough is enough!

And as a good side effect, fasten decoupling from the sinking American economy, as fast as we can manage.

From the Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2026/jan/17/hands-off-greenland-protests-denmark-us-donald-trump-europe-latest-news-updates

The plug is expected to be pulled on Donald Trump’s tariff deal with the EU by the European parliament on Wednesday after the two biggest blocs of MEPs said they would halt the legal ratification process in response the US president’s latest threats. Manfred Weber, the head of the European People’s Party, the largest voting bloc in the institute, said “approval is not possible” in light of the latest events. The remarks were backed by the second biggest voting bloc, the Socialists and Democrats (S&Ds).

Kathleen Van Brempt, vice president for trade for the S&Ds, said there could be “no trade deal under given circumstances”.

Together they represent 324 of the 720 seats in the parliament and are expected to be backed by the Greens and other groups.

“The EPP is in favour of the EU–U.S. trade deal, but given Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, approval is not possible at this stage. The 0% tariffs on U.S. products must be put on hold,” Weber said.

The deal entered into force last year in the US with tariffs of 15% being imposed on imports from the EU. But much to the annoyance of Trump, it has yet to be ratified by the European Parliament, which was already seeking amendments.

German MEP Bernd Lange, who chairs the EU’s influential trade parliamentary committee, said: “In view of the threat of imposing an additional 10% tariff from 1 February, I cannot imagine that we will continue business as usual and I assume that we will suspend our continued work.” He continued: “For me, there is no question that this is another new step with which the US side does not comply with the Scotland deal.

“We have already discussed intensively in a parliament about our obligation under the deal and were skeptical as to whether we can make US products duty-free if there is no reliability at all on the other side of the Atlantic that the deal will be adhered to. We will discuss this question again with the political groups on Wednesday.”

Perhaps a MAGA can remind me....what was Trump's rationale for the attack on Iran?

-Was it a threat to the US/

-Was it a threat to a US ally?

NATO can go through the same considerations right now.

-Is Trump a threat to NATO?

-Is Trump a threat to an ally of other NATO members?

Yes, he is.

Thus, NATO would be perfectly justified in taking out Trump. Perhaps during one of his frequent golf trips to Mar-a-Lago, NATO can launch a strike with Cruise missiles and bunker busters to vaporize Mar-a-Lago.

Don't get too excited. The EU interest groups will find a way to sabotage the benefits. The Belgian farmers did their utmost to block a free trade deal with Canada. Most countries have still not ratified the treaty a decade on. The EU couldn't cut a trade deal with the UK without the French trying to get in some extra bullying. Wait until the EU human rights campaigners start getting involved and invoking EU requirements for labour and civil rights rules. Telling Brazil what to do with its rain forest is going to go over like meeting a Tinder date covered in syphilis sores.

You don't need MAGA to tell you that the goal was to slow Iran's nuclear weapons progress and to send a mesage to Iran not to broaden its conflict. Aside from hostilities with Israel, it was threatening the UAE and KSA, as well as its usual threats to the UK and USA.

Yet all these "threatened" nations are against Trump using the military to topple the Iranian govt.

Frankly we (Europe) should just leave Trump to get on with it. The UK signed a trade deal a few months ago and he has just torn it up. There is no point in even bothering to try and do any deals with him. He is totally irrational and simply cannot be trusted!

He's just received a medal in picture frame from María Corina Machado to remind him of her achievement, that's not the Nobel Peace Prize for Trump which is only handed out by Norwegian Nobel Committee, but a gift. It won't make any difference to a recipient who has NPD, anything will do, and he won't be able to tell the difference.

I love it how we slap tariffs on the UK. Nothing to do with Denmark/Greenland but no doubt it is Presidentially sticking 2 fingers up at beta-boy sir kier. Im sure he was chanting "Kier Starmers a wa%$#&r" when he signed it.

I rather understood that is a requirement of a FIFA leader!

Let's just park the World Cup (and The Olympics) until the USA has a leadership with any credibility - we know the "Fragrant Leader" merely sees them as a vehicle for his incessant narcissistic grandstanding. Is there any international event or activity on which he has not smeared the contents of his diapers? World Cup, United Nations, NATO, Ukraines fight for survival, the Nobel Prizes, Papal Conclave, the list just goes on!
