A police operation in Nong Khai ended with the suspect shot dead and around six million methamphetamine pills seized after officers came under fire during an attempted arrest on 20 January 2026. Two police officers were injured as authorities intercepted a pickup truck allegedly transporting the drugs through Muang district.

The shooting occurred at about 14:40 at the traffic lights at Ban Nong Song Hong junction, in Khai Bok Wan subdistrict, on the outbound road from Nong Khai. Police said the suspect, a man driving a white Isuzu enclosed pickup truck with Bangkok registration plates, resisted arrest and fired at officers. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the steering wheel of the vehicle.

According to police, the operation was led by local and regional investigators after intelligence indicated a major drug shipment was moving through the area. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it failed to comply and tried to flee. During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly used a .45 calibre handgun to shoot at police.

At the scene, officers found the pickup truck damaged by gunfire, with shattered windows and bullet holes, alongside three police pickup trucks that had boxed it in. Spent bullet casings were scattered on the road and signs of collisions were visible between the vehicles involved.

Inside the enclosed rear of the truck, police discovered 15 sacks containing methamphetamine pills. Each sack held approximately 400,000 pills, bringing the total haul to about 6,000,000 pills. A .45 calibre handgun and ammunition were also found inside the vehicle’s cabin.

Two officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire. They were identified as Pol Lt Col Khemwat Phruetthikun, an inspector with Investigation Division 1, Region 4, and Pol Lance Corporal Phakphum Boonnga, a squad leader with the same unit. Rescue workers from Prajak Rescue transported both officers to Nong Khai Hospital, where police said their injuries were minor.

Pol Maj Gen Atthachon Chuangngam, commander of Nong Khai Provincial Police, said the incident occurred during an operation to intercept drugs and that the suspect fired first, causing injuries to officers. He added that full details would be reviewed and reported to senior commanders.

Amarin reported that Pol Maj Gen Phumipat Phatsriwongchai, commander of the Region 4 Investigation Bureau, said preliminary checks showed the drugs had been smuggled from a neighbouring country. He confirmed police would expand the investigation to dismantle the wider trafficking network linked to the shipment.
