A month after a devastating fire at Chalong pier destroyed 24 speedboats, operators remain without answers or compensation. Despite the blaze occurring on January 3, no progress has been made in determining the cause, and charred debris still mars the beach, causing frustration among residents and tourists.

The fire began early in the morning on a single speedboat, quickly spreading due to strong winds. The total damage is estimated at 100 million baht. While initial clean-up efforts started after investigators finished at the site, not all debris has been removed, leaving a lingering burnt smell.

Operators, including Ms. Suphannee of Racha Island Resort Boats, who suffered losses exceeding 8 million baht, and others like Somyot of Raya Princess boats, gathered at the provincial office demanding updates. They were told to await forensic results but have received no compensation or relief, leaving many facing financial crises as they struggle to rent boats to maintain operations.

Local residents and operators expressed frustration over the stalled investigation and clean-up. They questioned the lack of progress on an issue affecting livelihoods, tourism, and the environment, and asked whether anyone would be held accountable for the massive damage.

Phuket's deputy governor, Ekadul Chuthong, addressed the complainants, announcing a meeting with relevant agencies to resolve their issues. He assured that the remaining wreckage would be cleared within a week and that authorities would ensure the boat owner meets with investigators, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Speedboat operators await answers and compensation a month after the Chalong pier fire.

  • Debris remains despite initial clean-up, causing community dissatisfaction.
