Vietnam has made it to the top 10 list of the world's best countries for retirement in 2026, as per a ranking by the France-based website Retraite sans Frontières. This marks the first time Vietnam has achieved this recognition, highlighting its growing appeal to retirees, particularly from Europe. The ranking evaluates key factors like cost of living, climate, and healthcare quality, placing Vietnam at 9th position due to its affordability and improving infrastructure.

The trend of European retirees, especially from France, seeking residence abroad is rising, motivated by better quality of life and economic advantages. Retraite sans Frontières' index uses 12 criteria, with the cost of living being the most significant. Paul Delahoutre, founder of the website, noted that living abroad can enable retirees to save significantly on daily expenses, ranging from 15% to 50%, compared to residing in France.

In the 2026 ranking, Vietnam is praised for its diverse living environment and its steadily improving healthcare and urban infrastructure. The country offers a balance of affordability and quality of life, despite slightly higher living costs than some other Asian nations. Vietnam's tax policies, which often include incentives for foreign pensions, also add to its attractiveness.

Portugal remains the top retirement destination, benefiting from low living costs, proximity to Europe, and excellent infrastructure. Other countries in the top ranks include Spain, Greece, Thailand, and Mauritius, known for their respective advantages in cost, climate, and lifestyle amenities.

Experts advise that retirees planning to move abroad should assess living conditions, healthcare, safety, and integration opportunities by spending time in the intended destination. Vietnam’s entry into the top 10 is indicative of an increasing global trend in cross-border retirement, as more retirees consider international options for their golden years, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam ranks 9th in 2026 for best retirement destinations, climbing the list for the first time.

  • European retirees choose Vietnam for its affordable living and improved infrastructure.

  • The ranking evaluates cost of living, safety, and healthcare among 12 criteria.

No visa.

Shouldn't be any such list.

Duh.

I presume that you mean "retirement visa", is that correct?

Foreigners who marry a Vietnamese citizen are allowed to apply for a "retirement visa".

These lists come out regularly, and consistently fail to mention that Vietnam does not have a retirement visa. If someone wants to be forced to exit the country every 90 days for the rest of their life - with no guarantee that they will be allowed to reenter - then sure, go for it. That doesn't seem like a very relaxing retirement to me, though.

The list isn't about best countries to move to if you marry a citizen there

Duh.

Wonder where Vietnam'd be on the list if they had a reasonable retirement visa?

Or would they be swamped with too many retirees, many of whom spend their days on AN bitching about anything and everything?

Just joking folks...

yeah that is an uninformed list.

if you at any point have to travel, like for visa, -then its not a good place for retirement

It would likely be pretty high on the list depending on the details of the visa.

For example, Malaysia is desirable but their visa program asks too much.

I will be very surprised if Vietnam ever does start a retirement visa at all or if so it would likely be at Australia type levels.

That's not the path they have chosen and the path they have chosen has been very successful.

For them to do so now would be a bit desperate and needy and they're beyond that.

Wrong.

They can get a 5 year marriage visa, or a 3 year TRC,

A few from the first page of a Google search.

It's all over the internet.

Some guys prefer the 5 year marriage visa. Some guys prefer the 3 year TRC based on marriage. (Temporary Resident Card)
