The Great Santini: Was this Duvall's greatest role, ever?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Yes, it is true.

The Great Santini was, by far, the greatest performance, greatest role, Duvall ever delivered.

I was devastated when his plane went down.

Sure, Santini had his faults.

Seems to me that he might remind us of some fathers we might know, if you had one sort of like him.

But he was better, too, in many ways.

So, is this Duvall's greatest role?

Maybe more complex than others?

I recall that he did quite well in one or two other dramas, and he was such a fine actor.

But, to me, this film stands above the rest.

Hard to argue with this opinion, would you not say?

Best regards,

Gamma

Note: Such an endearing character, as well....

Shirley, that must be a typo.

I think you meant: UNDER-rated actor.

Speaking of the same author, though.

Do you recall the UNDER-toad?

Be afraid of China's Kung Fu robots.

Be very afraid.

No.

He did a stint in Twilight Zone.

One of my favorite books, besides the Sot-weed Factor, of course.

Note: Sometimes, and I do not know why, I mix up Barth, Conroy and that other Southerner...whats his face...

IRVING, I think...

When I was very young, I read a LOT...
Now, I do not read much of anything, other than what I must read...in order to...

Keep Up on the Doings of Sammy Boy.

Fine Wine.

One of the greatest roles of all time.

Gets better with age, even.

The video clip reminded me what it was like to grow up in a military family. Moving often, dealing with new schools and having making new friends.

This evocative film truly does hit home.

And, it hits home for all people.

So, it seems to be Duvall's greatest role..

There is something for everyone in this film.

And, who does not love the Can of Chowder scene, anyway....????

Chow down on me....Folks....

We are fairly devastated knowing that Duvall's plane has now gone down.

There will never be another actor so great, at least in Duvall's great way.

He needed the right role, to really let his talent shine, and this is true.

But, when he got the right role, he was unforgettable.

He could be tender, too, as when he talks to his crazy wife...

Tuesday Weld.

Dead at 95.

He lived a great life.

Gave many much, too.

There is no doubt he was terrific in that, it's just that he played such a ugly and difficult character it was off putting to a lot of people. I thought he was absolutely terrific in Open Range as well as it being a great film. Of course Godfather one and two were masterpieces and the quiet subtlety he brought to the role, masked great power and finesse.

He was also great in Hustle, the Judge, Jack Reacher, 7 Days in Utopia, Crazy Heart, We Own the Night, Broken Trail, Secondhand Lions, Assassination Tango, Days of Thunder and of course Apocalypse Now, and Lonesome Dove. As mentioned above Get Low was a quiet, endearing and tremendous performance. What an absolute Master of his craft. What an absolute joy to watch, I love that man. He will be missed.
