Fact Check: Trump’s State of the Union Claims Under Scrutiny

Trump state of the union.jpg

President Donald Trump delivered a wide-ranging State of the Union address Tuesday that included a series of claims about the economy, immigration, taxes and foreign policy. A review of the data shows that many of those assertions were false, exaggerated or lacking key context.

$18 Trillion Investment Claim

Trump repeated his claim that he secured more than $18 trillion in investment commitments since returning to office. That figure is unsupported. Even the White House’s own website has cited a lower number — $9.7 trillion in “major investment announcements” — and outside reviews have found that tally includes vague pledges and trade-related statements that do not amount to concrete domestic investment.

Gas Prices

Trump claimed gas prices are “below $2.30 a gallon in most states” and as low as $1.99 in some places. According to AAA data, no state average was below $2.37 at the time of the speech, and only two were under $2.50. While a handful of individual stations have dipped below $2, they are exceedingly rare.

Gas prices have fallen during his presidency — from $3.12 per gallon in January 2025 to $2.95 this month — but not to the levels he described.

Inflation Claims

Trump said he inherited “record” inflation and that the previous administration produced the worst inflation “in the history of our country.” Inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022 under President Joe Biden — a 40-year high — but far below the all-time US record of 23.7% in 1920. By the time Trump returned to office in January 2025, inflation was 3.0%. The most recent reading stands at 2.4%.

‘Stagnant’ Economy

The president described the economy he inherited as “stagnant” and said it is now “roaring like never before.” However, US GDP grew 2.2% in 2025 — slower than growth in any year of Biden’s presidency, including 2.8% in 2024. Unemployment has ticked up from 4.0% to 4.3% since Trump took office.

Largest Tax Cut in History

Trump again claimed his domestic policy package contained the largest tax cuts in American history. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the cuts total $4.8 trillion over a decade, or about 1.3% of GDP. Analysts note that ranks well below President Ronald Reagan’s 1981 tax package, which amounted to 2.9% of GDP over four years.

Migrant ‘Murderers’ Claim

Trump repeated his claim that the previous administration allowed 11,888 “murderers” into the country. That number appears to refer to non-citizens on ICE’s non-detained docket who were convicted of homicide at some point, often years after entering the US — including during Trump’s first term. The figure does not represent migrants freely roaming the country.

Who Pays Tariffs

The president again asserted that tariffs are “paid for by foreign countries.” In reality, tariffs are paid by US importers. Analyses from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Congressional Budget Office estimate that the overwhelming majority of tariff costs are borne by US businesses and consumers.

Minnesota Fraud Allegations

Trump claimed Somali residents in Minnesota stole $19 billion in fraud. While a federal prosecutor previously suggested that a large share of certain Medicaid claims could be fraudulent, no evidence has substantiated anything close to $19 billion, nor that all alleged fraud involved Somali residents.

Election Fraud

Trump claimed election cheating is “rampant.” Multiple studies and audits have consistently shown voter fraud to be exceedingly rare. Courts, election officials and independent reviews have found no evidence of widespread fraud in recent national elections.

‘More Americans Working Than Ever’

Trump said more Americans are working than ever before. While the raw number of employed people is at a record — largely due to population growth — the employment-population ratio has slightly declined since he took office, and unemployment has risen modestly.

Ending ‘Eight Wars’

Trump said he ended eight wars in his first 10 months. Some conflicts cited were diplomatic disputes rather than active wars, and in several cases violence has continued despite US-brokered agreements.

No Tax on Social Security

Trump claimed he eliminated taxes on Social Security benefits. His legislation created a temporary deduction for seniors 65 and older, but it did not eliminate Social Security taxes entirely, and many recipients still pay taxes on benefits.

Balancing the Budget by Ending Fraud

Finally, Trump claimed eliminating fraud could balance the federal budget “overnight.” The federal deficit was nearly $1.8 trillion last fiscal year. Even the highest Government Accountability Office estimate of annual fraud — $521 billion — falls far short of covering that gap.

Together, the claims illustrate a speech heavy on sweeping assertions that often conflict with official data and independent analyses.

Trump: Played 18 today and it was raining cats 'n dogs.

MSN: According to the National Weather Service, it has never rained cats and dogs on the contiguous 48 states, nor even on Hawaii or Alaska. Although a popular children's movie does refer to the weather being cloudy with a chance of meatballs, no mention was made of cats or dogs, or indeed Datsun cogs. Another boldfaced lie by the 47th President. coffee1

'The first duty of every government is to protect its citizens — not illegal aliens.'— Donald Trump.

False dichotomy.

Protecting citizens and upholding due process are not mutually exclusive.

The premise is illogical.

False dichotomy.

A government can both protect citizens and enforce immigration law while upholding due process.

Accepting otherwise is illogical.

Then why did the last administration to that?

Okay, the proves it. Now I wish I would have voted for Harris and open borders, mass migration, DEI, men in girls' showers, men in women's prisons, free sex change operations for incarcerated illegal aliens, and genital mutilation of children.

Have you ever supported and agreed with any anti TRUMP post on this forum?

Yes, per the left, ending open borders, mass migration, DEI, men in girls' showers, men in women's prisons, free sex change operations for incarcerated illegal aliens, and genital mutilation of children marks the end of democracy as the left wants it.

Your whole post was just another unsupported false claim. Per the rules, you have to support your claims!

No, it's Trump that's full of hate. Those of use who dislike Trump, despise him, regard him as a dangerous, lying, narcissist.

Examples of Trump's hatred-

Trump has described immigrants as "animals," "aliens," and "infest" . Mexico sends people who are "rapists".

Haiti , El Salvador and African nations are ''<deleted>hole countries''

Immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country" .

It's Trump that's full of poisonous hate.
