No excuse for racism...from anyone

My mom, step father and one cousin have red hair.

One of the most sickening pieces of propaganda for me are the advertisements which include red haired women with Africans. Only 1% of the world has red hair and fair skin and they're being shown alongside the endless hordes of black haired dark skinned Africans.

in the meantime would any other members care to enlighten me?

That is absolutely correct. In the English language, antisemitism has never referred to anything but a hatred of Jews. It has never applied to Arabs or any other group but Jews. The word was "borrowed" from German into English in the 1880s.

@Bday Prang gave us info from an AI query earlier in this thread:

In 1879, a German journalist named Wilhelm Marr wanted to replace the traditional German word for Jew-hatred (Judenhass) with something that sounded more modern and objective. At the time, "science" was being used to categorize people into races, so he chose "Antisemitismus" to make it sound like a rational opposition to a distinct racial group (the Semites) rather than a simple religious or personal dislike of Jews.

I have also written about this before:

The use of the word "Semite" to refer to an ethnic group is outdated.  The Encyclopedia Britannica explains it this way:

"Semite, obsolete term, popularized in the 19th century, that originally described a member of any people who speak one of the Semitic languages, a family of languages that includes Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic, Aramaic, and Tigrinya, among others. The term was later used in an ethnic sense, even though there has never been a shared Semitic identity among Semitic-speaking peoples. When used in that sense, Semite often referred specifically to people of Jewish origin, regardless of what language they spoke, a reflection of the antisemitism that was concurrent in 19th-century Europe."  https://www.britannica.com/topic/Semite

The word "anti-Semitism" or "antisemitism" entered the English language in1881 from the German Antisemitismus, which had been coined by Wilhelm Marr, a German journalist and agitator who thought it sounded more scientific and academic than the older Judenhaß  ("Jew hatred").  Marr himself is regarded as the "father of modern antisemitism,"  although he apparently renounced his anti-Jewish beliefs as an old man.  https://njop.org/the-origin-of-word-anti-semitism/

Bottom line:  the word "antisemitism" has never been used in the English language to mean anything but a hatred of  Jews.

As many of us know there is currently a white supremacist movement underway, and they are trying to instill the belief that anyone white is superior to anyone of color, which is completely ridiculous. Some of the most educated accomplished and amazing people I know are people of color and immigrants have made America what it is today.

Unfortunately we have truly ridiculous, shallow, hateful, nasty, horrific people like Donald Trump and Stephen Miller, who are pushing a white supremacist, white superiority, dark skin color is bad agenda, and a percentage of their less intellectual followers are buying into it.

The word has moved on from the actual literal meaning

Exactly. In plain English, “anti-Semitism” means hatred of Jewish people. That’s how the word is universally used and understood. People I’ve encountered who try to obfuscate this fact by saying that semitic languages include Arabic and Amharic, etc. etc., often have been accused of anti-Semitism themselves, and they’re just trying to muddy the waters by calling into doubt the very legitimacy of the word.

George Wallace used to say he was a segregationist, not a racist. That mindset has been passed on to supporters of Palestine who say they are anti-Zionist, not anti-Jewish. Does the distinction really matter in practice?

@NorthernRyland You are referring to segregation as though it were only a matter of housing. During the Jim Crow years in the U.S. South (1875-1965), segregation meant separation of the races in all aspects of life. Schools, restaurants, bars, restrooms, hotels, hospitals, public transportation, libraries, movie theaters and other entertainment venues, parks, beaches, whatever, were all segregated. There were even separate water fountains for "white" and "colored."

yes you're right he was a governor.

I don't see any problem though and I don't see why he apologized unless he got pressured to do so.

I'm sure he got pressured to do it- by his own conscience. From the public statements he made in the 1970s 1980s and 1990s, he realized it was wrong to discriminate against people solely on the basis of the color of their skin.

Practical considerations may also have put pressure on him. By 1970, Jim Crow laws had been overturned in Alabama and every other state. Black Alabamans were allowed to register to vote and white candidates could not longer win elections without at least some of the Black vote.

Imagine the Thai government gave citizenship to millions of farangs and then the Thais decided they were going to segregate the farangs so they don't have to mix together. Would that be wrong? I say no because the Thais were put upon by their government and they have the right to decide their own internal borders.

That's an unrealistic hypothetical example ("millions of farang"), but I'll take a shot at answering.

You have to distinguish between de jure and de facto segregation. De jure segregation would mean the separation of the two groups is mandated by Thai law; de facto means there's no law but there's racial segregation anyway, maybe because of social custom, tradition or personal choice.

If native-born Thais refuse to mix with naturalized former farang, then that's just the way things are. It's not a commendable attitude in my estimation, so my answer would be: yes, that's wrong, but not much can be done about it.

Obviously, I can only speak for myself. I am rabidly anti-Israeli as I am anti-American because of their actions. Not their culture, or colour or religion. I don't know enough about Zionism to comment but if Zionists are in support of war then, yes, I am anti-Zionist.

I can't say even that I'm pro-Palestine though I think anything that anyone can do to disrupt and interfere with Israel's war effort is a good thing. I'm anti-suffering, Ev, no matter who the hell's inflicting it.

Do you beleive that Israel has the right to exist ?

I know. Listened to some speeches from him. Remember it was only a tiny minority of wealthy people who could afford slaves and once that ended they were being released upon the general population. They didn't bring the slaves and didn't want to associate with them once it ended. He was appealing to freedom of associate which is just and valid in my opinion.

Of course, but not by force of arms. If that's what it takes to 'exist'. Nick, the whole world is lost.

No. The land was stolen from the previous occupants. That was a done thing in the past, but not acceptable in the last 100 years or so.

Israels right to exist was decided democratically by the Whole World in a U.N vote

No, they didn't. They voted to stop the fighting. Not only that, but we know there is always coercion and influence by the main members.

Don't pretend that they voted for the creation of Israel. If it weren't for the Jewish terrorists there would have been no vote at all.

That's completely different from your suggestion that they voted for the creation of Israel.

Why would they? It had nothing to do with most countries. It was a solution forced on to the Arabs.

The U.N voted for the creation of a Jewish state on the land

The U.N voted "Yes"

I didn't change anything , its completely the same

of course they do because they aren't bald or wear wigs like black women do.

Most Palestinians are semite and most Israelites are not as they mostly come from Europe and Russia

Not a lot of people know that.
