British Tourist Attacks Thai Officer, Gets Restrained

I strongly disagree! There was every need to do that! Re-assertion of the power of the law.

Whatever you may think - the laws of Thailand are the laws we all accept and abide by, living here as guests.

Would you conduct yourself in such a manner - anywhere in the world?

You try doing that in the USA or other countries where they would just put a bullet in you!

This arrogant British tourist still believes he is in the UK. He is not!

I hope they throw the book at him! I hope they throw the book at ANYONE who thinks it is OK to attack a police officer - regardless of where that policeman comes from.

This British guy makes me feel ashamed of the fact that a fellow countryman of mine, is yet again, demonstrating what exactly, is wrong with the UK right now.

I've been here 20 years - I have never once, thought it was OK to attempt such a disgusting display of uncouth, uneducated and arrogant stupidity.

I care not if you disagree with me; he deserves a heavy fine - a year in prison and then deported - at his financial expense! Irrespective of the reason this came about!

Another lout who brings shame to all of us British subjects living in Thailand, or anywhere else for that matter.

Exactly what I, a fellow Brit was thinking 👍

Surrendered? He was being held back by the 7-11 staff. The cop was pi***ed off. Believe it or not, they're like normal human beings. They don't like being punched.

What was the Brit thinking? How stupid can you be in this country to fight with the cops? Would you do that at home? Maybe in the UK,,,but everywhere else, it is a death wish.

He is lucky that there were no Motorbike guys in that store....

There was no need for that.

Once he hit the cop, it was over.....surrender or not, he crossed the line...and got lucky.

100000% agree.....living here, I have never, ever, ever been harrassed by the cops. They ignore me because I am obeying the laws and not causing <deleted> trouble....you have to bee an expert at being an <deleted> to have the cops mess with you in this country.

Whilst I agree that they should throw the book at him (Though I'm reminded of the incident with the 2 Kiwis who not only viciously assaulted a Police officer but got hold of his gun & got away with a slap on the wrist https://www.bangkokpost.com/learning/easy/2829461/duo-who-assaulted-phuket-officer-back-in-new-zealand ).

The point I am trying to make is the officer had full control of the guy (who seemed to have calmed down & realised he'd f'd up by then), & (IMHO) the choke hold wasn't necessary, it's a police officers job to use reasonable force at all times & IMHO at that stage the choke hold wasn't reasonable force, it could have killed the guy.

Anyways, seems I'm in a small minority of people who see it this way so will leave it for others to disagree with me.

Remains to be seen what this was all about, however the Brit is Lucky to be alive. Attacking police in Thailand normally brings the guns out immediately.

What did he expect he was never going win against police and 7/eleven huge company. Now he is the bangkokj hilton thinking about it probadly why

Once again it appears we have a clear winner for the country with the worst tourists in Thailand. Is it just Thailand or other countries as well?

video showing a British tourist attacking a Thai police officer inside a 7-Eleven store

Reminds me of the 2 Kiwi brothers attacking the police.

That case dissolved without trace, bet there was a lot of money exchanged.

Yikes, the imported scum count just keeps climbing!

Not so long ago Indians, Chinese, Russians and other Asians were the convenient targets of the word “scum.” Now some of the accusers appear to have taken a plunge into an even deeper swamp. Proof that scum is wonderfully democratic—it ignores nationality.

well something must have started it even a pi$$ed up british moron would not start trouble with a police officer for no reason will we ever know Anyway I'm sure he'll have time to sleep it off and ponder the error of his ways,

Pattaya attracts low lifes, fair enough they have to go somewhere , and as a result this sort of behaviour is not uncommon, considering the number of idiots that are drunk and at large in the place at any one time, its hardly surprising that these incidents occur.

To all the pearl clutchers voicing their outrage , get over yourselves , it's just another day in paradise, we are all as bad as each other in the eyes of the Thais who work there, they don't differentiate between the respective nationalities of foreigners, that only occurs on this and other english language forums

Just remember calling for his deportation or any other severe punishment does not make you look any better than anyone else, and assuming the thai authorities need your advice on how to deal with people like this smacks of arrogance, with a big dollop of virtue signalling

Where is Pattaya mentioned in the OP?

If in USA he would be shot....

Looks like it was bad behavior on both of their parts, obviously it's never a good idea to attack a police officer, but there's no reason for the police officer to behave like he did under the circumstances, so they both were behaving badly. I hope the press also pays attention to the inappropriate behavior of the cop.

FAFO. The cop had to assert control and remind him to never, ever do that again. His face would be bloody and a few teeth missing in the States...plus a taser or two.

I doubt it but am sure that he would sue the Officer/PD for assult and (on the basis of the little video evidence we've seen) win, irrespective of his earlier actions.

Eleven years here and I've never heard a 7.11 dog bark!

What caused this fight?

The Police Officer bought the last cheese toastie.

When the suspect was on top of the officer and pummeling his head the use of deadly force would have been justified. The tourist is lucky he is still alive to face charges. There comes a tipping point between restraint, desescalation and utltimately the use of force and even deadly force becomes necessary.

The cop already had control (he had him by the neck & the guy was compliant at this point), maybe he said or did something that we can't catch from the video so the officer did have reasonable cause to subdue him, but from that video alone it looked to me like unnecessary "Afters".

If I was on my back and the suspect was pummeling my head I would have drawn my Smith&Wesson 5906 and fired a contact shot agaiinst his kidneys. In my days this was part of the use of deadly force training continuum in my old agency. I don't know what they teach now.

Of course you would except farang cannot possess firearms in Thailand. But you knew that didn't you Rambo?

Indeed- I think the moron is lucky to have not suffered a lot more - although he may have "fallen down the stairs" when he gets to the Police Station.

There was a Police Station in London some years ago now that was infamous for its slippery stairs and no CCTV camera working there that explained many an accused appearing in Court the next morning heavily bruised

For those who are applauding the police officer's behaviour (i.e., putting the suspect in an extended chokehold after he had seemingly surrendered with the apparent aim of rendering him unconscious), below is a photo of Eric Garner, who died in NYC under similar circumstances. People forget how deadly chokeholds can be, especially if the person has other substances in their system.

He had to be restrained. If this were the USA, the UK guy would have been shot after being wrestled to the ground.
