Hi everyone,

Next year my parents and grandmother want to come and visit Bangkok and see all the sights (By sights I dont mean Nana Plaza.

They will be staying for about a week.

Any ideas on what to advise them on to see?

I was thinking:

Grand Palace

Floating Market

Jim Thompson Museum House

Thats about all I could come up with, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

My favourite is to take the river boat (avoid rush hour) from any pier and go to the last stop north and then take another one south and back to where you want to eat lunch. You see a lot of Bkk that way and a lot of culture and temples. Have fun

take them up to baiyoke sky at sunset.

on a river dinner cruise.

visit Ko Kred.

ocean world in siam paragon.

ayutthaya.

I was going to suggest the same. Get the boat from Sathorn to the end (15 baht orange flagged boat) and you get to see all the sights on the river. On the way back you can get off at the places that interested you.

Have a coffee at the oriental (Oriental Pier).

The Grand Palace is Tha Chang (Elephant pier).

From the Grand Palace you can get a tuktuk to Khao San Rd, five minutes which is about as long as you'd want in a tuktuk, but they would probably enjoy the experience, just the once.

Opposite the Grand Palace is Silpakorn University which has a few nice museams and art galleries inside. Anyone is welcome to pop in and look, it's the friendliest uni in Bangkok.

A walk up Khao San and another coffee. (See the stupid looking farangs...)

A walk around Paragon [siam Sq bts] (and another coffee) or Emporium [Phrom Pong BTS].

If you go to the floating market, a good one is Nakon Pathom which is a nice 90 minute train ride from Hualumpong, then a local taxi ride.

I hope that helps.

of course you can take them to kanchanaburi for the day. depends on what nationality you are, but i find that most 'oldies' like to see 'the bridge' and the war cemetary. if time permits, why not go to hellfire pass?

Thanks for the replies.

How far away is the Bridge on the River Kwai and also how far away is the floating market?

Thanks again.

Take them to the Grand Palce of course. maybe Wat Pho, dinner show at the Oriental. maybe a river cruise and diiner; Sirocco restaurant, the Puppet theater, maybe dad would like the carziness of Muy Thai boxing at Lumpini stadium, some shopping at Paragon, maybe a movie there; a crazy walk through Patpong, MBK and Kho San Raod, Chatuchuck (sp) weekend market and of course throw in a few spa treatments for mom, Blue Elepahnt restaurant, Ban Khinita ..heck lots to do!!!!

Temple of the Dawn is my favorite landmark in Bangkok. Beautiful temple. Go there.

Thanks for your replies.

Is the River Kwai and Floating Market tour in the same direction as each other?

I mean if your on the way to the River Kwai do u go past the floating market?

Would it be a good idea to do them both in 1 day?

Thanks

Yes, that river taxi cruise from Sathorn pier is a very good & cheap way of seeing lots & using up a few hours. As i've said before, if you come back on the last boat from Nonthaburi (last stop) APPROX 6.30pm you come back into the city in the dark, it really is quite a sight the first time you see it.

Also, well worth a look is the 3 headed elephant statue (Erawan Museum?). I forget where its at, (samut prakan???) but is something very unusual most tourists don't see & many Bangkokians don't even know of it.

Then there's the giant swing... even i haven't found that yet.

No Makavelli, I don't think it's possible to do Floating Market and River Quai on the same day unless you want to rush around. Floating market would be early in the morning and Rver Quai takes about two hours to get to - west out of Bkk. When you get there you can take a raft down the river between Burma and Thailand which is nice. And a few miles from Kanchanaburi is Erawan National Park which actually would merit an overnight stop. It's a bit steep mind you but has seven waterfalls which you can swim in and picnic beside, very popular with Thai people.
