Honestly, Messi had one of his best days yesterday. How do you stop him when he is that dominant and fighting for his country? One of the better football battles I have seen in a long time, except for the sissies spending half the game rolling around on the ground.

When that is said, they tried hard to take Messi down and wear him out, but he was a true warrior yesterday. Respect.

Messi is a great player, no denying that.

How do you stop him? Well, play the way that England did in the first half. Press and defend high. Deny him space and time on the ball and when he does get on the ball, try and ensure that it is in positions where he can't hurt you. And yes, employ the 'dark arts' and rough him up a little.

England did all that for 60 mins and it worked. The coach then had a brain fade. Took off probably our best player on the night, Gordon, who was not only good going forward but was doing very well defensively and replaced him with a CB. This enabled Messi to simply stroll into the wide open spaces on our left flank, meant that we defended deeper, and ceded both possession and territory to Argentina. Great players like Messi will have their moments in any match but there is no need to make it easy for them

It was the worst tactical decision by an England coach since Alf Ramsey took off Bobby Charlton with England leading West Germany 2-0 with 20 mins to go in 1970 (we eventually lost 3-2 in case you didn't know). At least, you could see the rationale in Ramsey's decision i.e. give your star player a breather; the game looks won, Tuchel has no such excuse.

BP can obviously speak for himself, but I imagine that he feels the same way about all the England players irrespective of their colour.

TBF that Argentinian fan does seem to be a bit of a tool. Emotions were obviously going to run high after the match and the Argentina team and public have engaged in provocative behaviour beforehand.

Obviously this individual fan can't be blamed for any of that, but did he really think that it would be seen as a friendly gesture to parade along Regent Street in the centre of London dressed in his team's national shirt with his chest stuck off in the immediate aftermath of England's defeat?

I'm currently in Brussels and watched the match in the pub with friends. Mainly English fans present but a group of a dozen or so Argentina fans also there. There was little interaction between the two groups of fans but no provocative behaviour either, and TBF no gloating from the Argentine fans at the end of the match. However, I must admit if there had been and/or if any 'Malvinos' chants had rung out, despite my advanced age, I might well of clocked one of them.

Just as long as you understand what you are rooting for.

In the past, you were rooting for players with the same ancestral ties.

Now, for most teams, you are rooting for people with the same passport.

It's not exactly the same. To pretend it's the same thing is kind of silly.

And maybe a lot of people don't care.

But I will just root for whatever team I like that has nothing to do with any particular country.

In this tournament, I liked Haaland and Messi because they are the most entertaining.

Baiting a reaction is a thing.

I like this guy, an American turned Brit. Usually he practises Brit sarcasm in his posts, and he's getting quite good at it, but here he reminds us of the upside to the World Cup, the bringing of nations together.

There's only one winner finally, so of all the teams that went to the US, that's few players out of the total number of participants.

So, best to enjoy and simply celebrate the games where the football was attractive.
