Oh I see, 2 tier DEI. How predictable. When black people are under-represented we must have DEI to fix it. When it's white people under-represented, we must pretend they are incapable and black people are simply better.

That's the problem, Jonny: You don't see (at least not correctly). Your sense of misplaced self-grievance is so marked that you manage to view (almost) anything as an attack on your white Englishness.

No, you do not have to employ DEI policies each and every time when black people are under-represented. Nor do you have to when white people are under-represented. If there is a level playing field as there is in football in England DEI is not necessary.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tuchel had been influenced by the ultra woke, knee taking, rainbow lace promoting leftist organisation, the FA, to pick a mostly black side.

The left clearly thought that an England win with "diverse" players would unite the nation behind diversity. The likes of The Guardian showed their hand and shot their load too early and started celebrating it before we won. They've suddenly gone very quiet after the semi final results.

'Exhibits ... err ... sorry, m'lud, I've lost count ... n, n+1, ...n+ ...

You obviously don't realise how ridiculous this sounds.

You have lost contact with any sense of reality.

We were awful. No creativity. Foden/Palmer left behind. Not even in the squad. A German coach substituting our goal scorer in the final and putting Dan Burn (a centre back) up front. Bizarre. We deserved to lose.

We weren't awful. We were inconsistent. We were excellent in parts (Croatia, Mexico, until we scored in the semi) and poor in many other games (Ghana, DR Congo, after subs in Argentina match).

We all have our views about who should have been in the team. Imo Tuchel was proved correct in leaving out Foden and Palmer, neither of whom had good seasons. If one of them had been taken, then Gordon probably wouldn't have gone and he was one of our best players in the tournament.

The substitutions cost us the semi-final.

Well done Spain (unfortunately Raymond your great hope for Spanish diversity, Yamine Lamal, under-performed in the tournament).

Yes, well done Spain. Did all football fans a favour. A victory against your favourite side, the anti-football Argentina.

Lamal wasn't as influential throughout the tournament as I'm sure that he and Spain would have hoped but he still had his moments.

The fact that you openly celebrate the "failure" of a 19-year old black player says all we need to know about you, Jonny.

You were claiming children of immigrants born in England are ethnically English. You called me racist when I pointed out the fact that they are not.

No, I did not claim children of immigrants born in England are ethnically English and, yes, I did call you racist because what you say is racist.

You either don't understand what I have said or are lying. I suspect it is the latter.

What I have said all along is that 'Ethnic Englishness' is a meaningless concept when applied in 21st century England as the number of people with a pure bloodline dating back to the indigenous tribes of England is Infinitesimally small.

Once you redefine 'Ethnic English' - as you tried to do - to include immigrants such as Saxons, Romans, Vikings, etc, the term becomes even more meaningless and in redefining the term, you must - for consistency's sake - also allow for the possibility that latter-day immigrants e.g. African immigrants can also be considered 'Ethnic English'.

What you can't do - as you have consistently tried to do to suit the situation - is to switch between the established definition of 'Ethnic English i.e. bloodline to the indigenous tribes of England and your revised definition i.e. add latter-day white immigrant groups' such as Romans, etc.

7 hours ago, JonnyF said:

Now you've walked that back. I think you owe me an apology Ray. Seems you can't tell black British people to deny their true ethnicity after all. Seems you don't get to erase their heritage like you try to do to the English. 😄

See previous paragraph. I haven't walked anything back. I don't owe you an apology, Jonny. In fact, you should thank me for pointing out the flaws in your argument which should, if you act rationally, mean that you reconsider your position.

I'm not trying to deny anyone their heritage. You are trying to deny 'Black Englishman' their English identity.

7 hours ago, JonnyF said:

At least you've admitted you were wrong for once. Embarrassing, Ray.😄

Indeed, it is embarrassing, Jonny but not for me. Your twisting, turning and avoidance of facts would be humiliating for most people but, seemingly, you have no shame. In some ways, I feel sorry for you.

Actually, there was a major oversight on my part. Nowhere in this torturous exchange have I directly asked you the most pertinent question.

Notwithstanding my comment about the irrelevance of the concept of 'Ethnic English' in 21st century England, 'Why does it matter that a Black person is not ethnically English? i.e if a Black person was born in England, identifies as English and is proud to be English, what is the difference - apart from skin pigmentation - between this individual and a similar White Englishman?

Some supplementary questions for you to answer: Is the white Englishman somehow 'more English'? And more importantly, what are the implications? Should these two individuals be treated differently simply because of the difference in skin pigmentation?

Not in my eyes, how about you, Jonny?

I don't understand your point.

Like all walks of life, there are different levels of ability.

I used to play a fairly decent level of amateur football (both men's and Vets) and played with and against some lower-level - mainly 3rd/4th tier - ex-pros. I wouldn't call them 'superstars' but, more often than not, they stood out as the best players on the pitch. However, if you had put them on the same pitch as "mediocre" World Cup players such as Gusto, Rabiot, Toney, Chalobah, etc or similar players from the past, I'm almost certain that most of them would have been out of their depth.

1 minute ago, RayC said:

I don't understand your point.

My point is not that difficult to understand.

A small percentage of players are highly talented and impossible to replace.

Many players on each team are not highly talented and there are many other players out there who could replace them and no one would notice and it wouldn't make any difference in the team's outcome.

Team building is a lot more than just putting talent together. Every position has its own qualities to fill.

The best players often do not get much attention in the spotlight, but they keep the team together and control the game.

Your ‘ethnically English’ construct is meaningless.

England didn’t exist as a nation until the late 10th Century, nobody could call themselves English before that date.

Less than a century later the Normans conquered England, replacing the whole of the nobility, the vast majority of the clergy and instigated French as the language of the ‘English State’.

For over 300 years the only literature in England was written in either French or Latin.

Many of England’s current nobility trace their family lineage in an unbroken line back to the Norman conquest. Still lording it over ‘the English’ over 900 years after taking the place over.

In the interim years there has been constant flows of immigrants, Jews in the Middle Ages, Huguenots and Flemish in the late Middle Ages, Dutch in the 18th Century, immigrants from across European, specifically more Jews, and Irish in the 19th Century, commonwealth immigrants in the post WW2 period.

And non of that included the constant immigration intermarrying and inter breading around England’s numerous sea and inland ports.

Centuries of immigrants arriving in the England, settling down, getting on with life and within a generation being as English as the next Jonny down the road.

You’re ’Ethically English’ is absolute nonsense.

No Jonny, it wasn’t a Guardian News Letter, it’s based on the facts to the history of immigration to England. Feel free to point out which phases of of immigration I referred to were not in fact historically correct.

And while you’ll fail at that, please provide a link to the screenshots you’ve posted.

I really would like to read more about what the source of your unattributed screenshot has to say about “ The term ‘Ethnic Erasure of English ’ generally refers to the perceived marginalization of English Identity, History and Culture”.

I suspect the perception of what is English identity is as much myth as it is fact, your inability to accept centuries of immigrants as part of English Ethnicity is a clue I might be right.

Out with it Jonny, a link to your unattributed screenshot.

How many times do I have to explain this to you?

  1. There are an infinitesimally small number of Englishmen alive today who have a bloodline which can be traced back to the indigenous tribes of England.

  2. Those Englishmen living today - almost certainly including you and me - have ancestors from a combination of 'tribes' who were not indigenous to England, but were immigrants and/or invaders e.g. Romans, Angles, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, etc

  3. The phrase 'Ethnic English' therefore has little practical meaning if you apply it to Englishmen living today

  4. If you redefine the phrase 'Ethnic English' to include the tribes named in 2) as you do, then why not include latter day immigrants such as Africans? However, if you do so then the phrase - which has little practical value - loses even its' academic and semantic value.

Technically, the ancestry is constantly morphing ...

From AI:

The original ancestry of England isa complex blend of ancient populations, primarily formed by the indigenous Celtic Britons and mass migrations of West Germanic tribes—the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes—who arrived from the 5th century forward.

The English people and their culture are specifically descended from a layered history of populations:

  • The Indigenous Britons: Long before England existed, the island was inhabited by Celtic-speaking people. These indigenous groups were a mix of ancient Ice Age settlers, Neolithic farmers, and Bronze Age migrants.

  • The Anglo-Saxons: Following the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, waves of Germanic tribes (the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes) migrated across the North Sea from modern-day Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Genetic studies show these tribes had a massive impact, accounting for roughly three-quarters of the early medieval population's ancestry in eastern England. In fact, the name "England" (from Englaland ) translates directly to the "Land of the Angles."

  • Subsequent Migrations: The English genetic landscape was further shaped by Viking/Norse invasions in the 9th and 10th centuries and the Norman Conquest in 1066, which introduced significant Scandinavian and French ancestry into the mix.

While a Jewish community was established shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1066, the entire population was expelled from the country by King Edward I in 1290. There were only a few thousand of them, maybe 0.1% of the population.

They didn't have a continuous presence and were officially readmitted to England in the 1650s under Cromwell.
