A couple or so months ago the shelves in Tesco and Central had Marmite aplenty. Now. Nowhere. Bit ticked off as advised visitor from UK not to bother bringing the usual ration last visit as Phuket had it. Anyone seen some recently?

MARMITE ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!! None left in Phuket.... emergency, please send cargo! :D

Seriously, I had the same problem with thin rice cakes (made in Oz) at Tops in Central - always plenty and told my sister "no worries".

Have not seen them in a year now and will ask her to bring a suitcase full this month! :o

TOPS has relocated a lot of the stuff. My precious jam was put near the f#*$&*ing milk. Marmite is there, near the mustard.

Marmite in stock at Farang Shop, Patong;

We are going off Tops, always running out of something and inefficient re-stocking procedures. Wait till it's gone and then re-order it seems.

Anyway Big C is better for fresh foods, and the fruit market in Phuket Town better than anywhere, arguably!

Where is the farang shop in Patong ??

And of course we are talking real (glass jars) UK Marmite not that crud in the plastic tubs which is NZ Marmite and sweeter than vegamite arent we !!

Vegamite is marmite barrel scrapings obviously !!

From Patong hill turn left into one way system towards Kata/Karon, is it Rachatit Road?, Farang Shop about 150 mters on left, and it is REAL Marmite there.

I've shopped at the Deli for many years, but these days many specialist items are always out of stock. Just yesterday I had a passing word with the owner/manager about this, but he just blamed suppliers.

Was in Tops in Central just yesterday, and being aware of thai idea of layout (!?), looked absolutely everywhere, three times. Not near the mustard, jams or italian pasta, babies milk, etc. NOwhere. Same same Tesco who had heaps of the stuff only a couple of months ago. By the way, saw some jars of Dugong parts in oil! Isn't this supposed to be illegal?

yes, the dugong parts is very interesting. why not go back, get a photo or something (even with your mobile) and put it on here so we can see what we are dealing with here.

i also support a boycott if this is the case.

news bulletin, breakin news

" Marmite has been taken off the world markets, it's been discovered that it leads to a disease called soapdodgerism, which has been rampant amongst the english people for decades.

It was found that when they changed the name from "Parwill" an ingredient was also omitted.

The good news is that one Vegemite sandwhich per day can offer a cure, the length of treatment is not clear though.

Researchers are linking this the fact it's a beef extract and mad cow disease would be a relevant contributor.

They have also applauded the fact that Vegemite is a yeast extract, a by product from brewing beer, so it's beened lauded as recycling in it's purest form"

:o:D

Yes go back, get a photo (sadly perhaps even buy one for proof) then discuss with the gazette for ed piece or letters to and also confront tops management.

THAT will be fun. Will check it out. Where exactly was this jar? And if I find the Marmite, will post exact location for the OP.

The dugong parts were in a small jar on the top shelf in amongst the other asian canned and bottled foodstuffs, third or fourth aisle along on the right I think. The label was in Chinese, and read in English 'Dugong parts in oil'. I don't see there's anything to be gained from actually buying one, only encourages them. But yes, perhaps a word with the Gazette couldn't do any harm, anyone have any connections? Don't think a word with the manager would ruffle his feathers, who must have had a say in their acquisition in the first place.

To a previous poster, Marmite is a yeast extract by the way. Bovril (bovine, geddit?) was the beef extract.

Sadly, the Bovril that I grew up with as a child no longer contains beef extract but now some kind of strange *beef extract Substitute* and it just doesn't taste the same. :o

I myself tend to prefer Vegemite over Marmite; it's just more intense and richer in flavour but then I'm addicted to the stuff so it could just be bias talking. :D

Vegamite (which I have been known to use in 'make do situations'.. Vegamite is basically Marmite barrel scrapings :D !! ) is just that bit sweeter / less intense IMO.. And the NZ branded Marmite WAY sweeter.. I have a theory its just what you were given as a kid and you become branded for life :o !!

My buddy uses Marmite to make faux bovril drink ?!?!

Might even do Marmite toast with poached egg on top for breaker.. hmmm..

Marmite on toast sounds good, not too sure about the poached egg though. Is there anywhere on the island that can actually do decent toast? There are places that do half decent fry ups, but the accompanying toast is generally disappointing - either too thickly cut or barely warmed through, usually both.

Thin cut crispy toast needed!
