I just went today (02/10/07) to get my temporary (1year) car and motorcycle licence's.

All in all they were pretty efficient for a Thai office, and it took more or less 1hr.

This is what you need:

1. Passport with visa - original and 1 photocopy

2. Original present address in Thialand certificate from Embassy, OR original work permit and 1 photocopy.

3. Original medical certificate (not more than 1 month old)

4. Original and photocopy of;

a) International driving licence

OR

:o Local (home country) driving licence, translated to English or Thai (translation needs to be certified by Embassy I think, British licences, at least, are ok)

5. If you are qualified to drive in #4 then all you need to do is take a further reaction test (5 mins - easy). If you are not qualified to drive in #4 then you will have to take a test:

- training 2hrs

- written test

- reaction test

- driving test

You shouldn't need them, but take a couple of 1 inch passport photos just in case. They take your photo with a digital camera and it's printed on to the card licence.

Fee: Car = 105 B Motorcycle = 55 B

Offices seem to vary, Pathum Thani wanted exactly the same stuff as for the initial application, as detailed above except for the IDP and home-country licence. You don't have to do the tests again.

Make sure your 1 year has actually expired before applying for the 5 year (don't apply on the last day, apply one day after).

It's normal to have separate licences for car and motocycle :o

One thing it's worth remembering. They use your passport number as the licence number, so if your PP expires before the licence ensure you keep a copy of the old PP, it makes life easier when you come to renew (advised by the Pathum Thani office when I renewed earlier this year).

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"
