To Be Or Not To Be...

Featured Replies

Earlier this year I met a person - a special person - who was helping to build a very big boat. This boat is supposed to sail around the world. The boat's name is SY Lucky. The boat is named after a dog that got runned over and died. This weekend, SY Lucky went on a little trip from Phuket to Phi Phi to test her training sails. She sunk.

Should my friend going sailing around the world on Lucky? :o

ps. this is a true story!

I don't know anything about the boat or the circumstances that it sank in but, well... I don't like to give up so I'd say, check out why it sank and then go ahead

and then khall can come play with Seonai and live happily ever after? :o

Reminds me of that line from the film 'Love, Honor and Obey'

"Hes been stabbed, force fed LSD and dog food and had a toilet brush stuck up his ass, whats his name? Lucky?"

Not an exact quote, just going from memory

I recommend getting it UNsunk before attempting any journeys.

Oh, and then perhaps finding out why she sunk.

:o

No doubt the dog died after your friend's house ( which was called " Really Lucky ' ), fell on it.

Sorry to hear that Khall... :D

Hope your friend is OK; btw, wasn't he the friend you were supposed to 'sail' along with ?

Anyway, the future signs aren't too safe to sail again IF the boat can be lifted and maybe the signs were LUCKY for you after all. :D

LaoPo

On a serious note. Your friend and your good self should not make sail on " lucky" again until a certified naval architect has assessed the damage and come to a sensible conclusion as to how the vessel sank and what can be done to make it seaworthy. The oceans are no place for amateurs or folk on unsound vessels. Be very careful.

Need more information on how thw boat sank. Did it have all it's equipment already installed? was anything stripped off first? Is it a really expensive boat? Was it designed by a naval architect?

Every person I know that has lost a sailboat has lost it intentionally. Usually after they've stripped the expensive stuff off. The rich are like that. They kill their racehorses for insurance money too.

Anyhow, it's really hard to sink a well made sailboat. Usually you have to leave the seacocks open or break the keel off.

Surely you could get lucky without risking your life on an unsafe boat!

:D

Lucky got unsunk today and will be towed back to Phuket later this week to make her more seaworthy. Verdict is that there was not enough ballast in hull, was hit by a large swell followed by big wind catching sails and tipping her over on side, filled with water and half sunk. All mobile phones and ipods lost, crew are safe and sulking.

Apparently 20 boats came to rescue from Phi Phi, they are getting good at rescues there now as so many sunken boats lately...

I was never going sailing, I get seasick Laopo. :o

I think he should stuff the dog and put it on the front of the boat.

I thought comments on bestiality were not allowed ?

Sounds like the crew doesn't know how to sail properly.

Not-so-lucky yacht sinks

KOH PHI PHI: A sailing yacht sank in Ton Sai bay, off Koh Phi Phi Don around 2 pm on October 7.

The unfortunate vessel, named Lucky, departed from Phuket on October 6 and anchored in Ton Sai bay in Krabi.

According to Pol Lt Col Somchart Supawut, inspector of Krabi Marine Police, on the same day, the yacht raised its sails to leave Ton Sai bay before the anchor had been completely pulled in. A strong gust of wind then caught the sails and capsized the boat, which then sank.

On board were the owner of the boat, a 39-year-old American identified only as Mr Smith, along with another American, an Irishman, a Norwegian, an Australian and two Thai crew members. The crew of a Krabi Marine Police patrol boat were close enough to hear their calls for help and responded quickly to rescue the stranded yachtsmen. No one was injured.

Col Somchart told the Gazette, “Luckily for them, we were just about 900 meters from their boat when it sank. It was about a 15-person, wooden sailing yacht, and the owner was able to salvage the yacht on the same day, at around 5 pm.”

Pol Lt Col Jakra Saowakon, chief of Koh Phi Phi Substation, told the Gazette, “The yacht owner hasn’t reported to us so we don’t have any additional information about him. I heard that when he got his yacht back after it was salvaged, he went back to Phuket.”

Kan Win :D

P.S. so who was the Wanker Man :D in the above tale :D

Pol Lt Col Jakra Saowakon, chief of Koh Phi Phi Substation should get his gossip straight before talking to the media.

The boat and crew is still on Phi Phi salvaging and cleaning for preparation to tow back to Phuket.

ps. There was no Norwegian on board, but several jolly Englishmen are still to be found as crew-a-waiting. The boat was not salvaged same day as reported. The two Thai crew have since returned to Phuket and wrecked Captain Smith's truck :D

Turn the Lucky into a floating museum and fly to wherever your friend is going

But, a different flight :o

Khall I know this is a serious story but the above reads like the beginning of a joke vis: An American, an Irishman, and an Australian went into a pub one day and the barman said "is this a beginning of a joke?"

This always reminds me of another joke;

A Woman walks into a bar and asks the barman for a double entendre, so he gave her one! :o

A famous ditty. In my younger day after copious quantities of the correct vocal cord lubrication I could also recite most of "The Ballad of Eskimo Nell".

There you go then..... the boat is lucky.

Well, it didn't hit an iceberg :o

Yet :D

Having seen the boat in question under construction near Khao Lak and hearing how on it's tow to Phuket for it's fit-out it became stuck under the Sarasin Bridge, along with it's latest "accident", and also knowing that another boat built at the same boat-yard (and I use the term loosely) is currently the subject of a legal enquiry as to it's seaworthiness, I therefore suggest you warn your friend to take all necessary precautions (and then some).

I have known of sailors who believe that some boats are jinxed this may be one of them.

I hope not.

I heard that they had the sails up before the anchor was clear of the seabed.

The boat went sideways to the seas and the wind blew her over.

Bad seamanship. Don't ever sail on her with her present crew.
