Even with capitulation in 1940, the Finns were still very much respected. Losing great parcels of their Nation in an unjust " peace " treaty, one Russian General was said to have commented that although they won " We have gained just about enough land to bury our dead ". The Finns lost around 25,000 dead to the Russians 250,000. ( add to that figure the 5000 repatriated Russian prisoners, who were handed back to the NKVD and never heard of again )

Mannerheim their most noble of leaders did not even learn to speak Finnish until he was 15, but became a hero through the bloody Finnish Civil War ( 1918 ) and afterwards fighting the reds in the street before leading the Finns to give old Ivan a very bloody nose indeed. He was a man of such stature, that unbidden, Adolf Hitler bowed to him on their first meeting.

I used to work with an Australian who could roll his tongue and still manage to touch the tip of his nose with it. He was very popular with the girls in the office, which I must admit I found a bit strange, as he could not play the piano.
