Yes folks it's official, Bedlam is about to bite the dust. Taking over will be a new lounge with comfortable chairs, drinks, videos, newspapers. Hang on I'm getting mixed up with the Thai Inter lounge at the Airport.

So what can we expect from a pay to view Platinum Lounge ?

Naw, Bedlam is not going anywhere....(in more ways than one, perhaps ).

The Platinum program has several features, among which is the new skin, which loads considerably faster. For us lucky souls with broadband, perhaps not an issue, but for the folks out in the country on dialup or a slow wireless connect, definitely a plus.

And for the people who are driven into an absolute inchoate rage at the sight of any advertising, the Platinum package is ad-free.

Lots of other benefits as well. If it's not your cup of tea, no worries....

Mind you, on a broadband connection the site works fast enough. I would pay for extra value added items such as ....... & ....... but not a great amount. 500B - 5000B for a lifetime would be OK if the extras were tantalising enough.

Notwithstanding the last comment, if I was a newbie again & asked to pay - it would most likely be a no. Until people get the hang of the site, make virtual (& real life) friends & feel accepted into the online community I don't think they will shell out the cash.

Might have a negative impact on some exhisting senior members too.

It's been tried before.

Small forum - it fails.

Large forum - it fails monumentally.

Out of the 50k members that TV has, how many are multiple identities, how many are trolls, how many have never posted at all....... over 90% ?

At this time there are 119 signed up members logged in, what's the highest number you have seen, a thousand maybe, certainly not five thousand.

Subscription membership does not work for this medium...... number of clicks and total number of members does.

Disagree - there are loads of sub only forums that are successful (somethingawful.com)

BUT does the subscription give me for example, the right to call a mod a <insert rude term for female genitalia> without the banstick being waved? After all, it's a cash loosing move......would it allow subscribed members more "rights" in this sence ?

I don't want to offend the powers that be, but a word to the wise: Asking members to pay for almost anything on the Internet has proven over time to be a losing proposition. You've got to make your money with advertising.

Even the New York Times finally gave up on trying to get people to pay for their best articles as of a few weeks ago. Now the whole website is free.
