Fog Light Laws

I recently heard of a colleague (foreigner) at work of mine pulled over by the Bangkok cops for not having covers on his vehicle fog lights. He has two front fog lights attached to the bull bar of his SUV that came new with the vehicle from the showroom without covers. Fine on spot 500B. Anyone know the laws on this in Thailand? Was he breaking them or just ripped off by a cop?

Don't know the law but have a set of fog lights on my Nissan. Have driven all over Thailand (Chiang Mai to Pattaya to Surin) and was stopped at many check points and not once sighted for no covers but was sighted for speeding and driving too long in the right lane. :o

Sound's similar than some european laws,,,extra fog lights must be covered during normal weather condition and should not be able to turn on with high beem same time...

Never heard Thai police to pull any one over for those as they are so common,, but good to know now,,i HAD subaru imressa rally set (4 x 150w) in my mazda hood all the time open and police never say anything,, just wondering what in earth is that car,,,

but BKK cop's are starnge and they smell money for anything what farang is doing..

I posted about this some time ago when I was in a friend’s car and he got fined for having exposed fog lamps in Bangkok.

At the time nobody believed this and all thought it was a wind up. It’s satisfying to get conformation of this and perhaps the “I’ve been driving all over for years and never got pulled over” brigade will pay more attention. The law apparently only applies in Bangkok.

Interesting, yes this guy I heard about has been driving ten years in Bangkok with the same SUV and fitted fog lights, and he was recently pulled over for the issue for the first time. I mentioned it to my Thai wife who is not sure of the laws but alert to Thai police scams and in this case she immediately said the fog lights are an issue in Bangkok for their blinding effects if pointing high so she thinks the police were following the rules by ruling they should be covered if not being used.

I think many new SUV's have built in foglights in the bumper from the factory. Where to get the covers and how fit them? In fact they are not even real fog lights in Thailand. They are all just spot lights. Even aftermarket bumberlights, not even have any covers anymore. I got once cought with a Toyota Crown with original built in yellow foglights (real ones). The cop sayd to me, that in Thailand are no yellow foglights. I sayd him nicely that i bought this car in Thailand and there where original built in already. So finally he let me go. But i don't know the law about this matter. But i see more and more cars fitted with "fog lights" wich are actuially spot lights.

Strange as it may seem, I went through fog this morning at 5am in surat thani on my way to samui. Confused me, I thought it was smoke at first. Concerning the fog lights, I suspect there is one policeman in bangkok who has noticed this little rule and is milking it for all he can
