Pilot Lands Copter to Pick Mom Mushrooms

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — A Thai air force pilot has been suspended from flying duties after allegedly landing his helicopter in the countryside to collect wild mushrooms for his mother, a spokesman said Friday.

The air force ordered the provisional suspension and began investigating after villagers in the western province of Kanchanaburi reported the incident to police, said spokesman Capt. Monthon Satchukorn.

Monthon said villagers said that a helicopter had circled a jungle clearing Wednesday before landing, and when some of them went to investigate, they found that the pilot had gone.

When the pilot eventually returned, he told them he had been collecting mushrooms for his mother.

"The pilot will face punishment for abandoning his helicopter without anyone to look after it and also for violating other rules," Monthon said.

Not quite I recall an incident with the Royal Air Force where an officer of Air rank used a C130 to transport sand for a golf course. Once some ungrateful erk had informed the newspapers he was on his way out. I am sure there must be similar stories for other forces and officers who abuse their positions.

Not quite I recall an incident with the Royal Air Force where an officer of Air rank used a C130 to transport sand for a golf course. Once some ungrateful erk had informed the newspapers he was on his way out. I am sure there must be similar stories for other forces and officers who abuse their positions.

I recall the story of an engine-driver & his fireman, this is in the good old days you understand, who left their small goods-train for a quick mushroom-hunt, late one evening down on Romney Marsh.

Unfortunately the mist came down, thick as anything, and they decame disorientated. And couldn't find the tracks. This being out in the middle of nowhere - a very under-populated area, except for the famous sheep.

Fortunately the guard, becoming concerned at his driver's failure to return, gave a few 'toots' on the engine's whistle, so that the lost two were able to find their way back. Almost out of water & coal, they just managed to steam up the hill, and the remaining several miles to the depot at Ashford, on the pressure remaining.

And thus did not have to make some embarassing explanations to the local 'Fat Controller'.

So this incident with the helicopter is far from being a modern tale. :D

its amazing the lengths to which some people will go collect for themselves, sorry their 'mother', these innocuous looking little mushrooms...
