West Ham United's Rivals

Featured Replies

The wheels are starting to crank up and turn, in anticipation of the derby on Sunday. It's the Irons V the Spurs. Many see it as the 'Big One' ,as far as WHU go and wikipedia even call it 'The Hammers derby'. However when I started watching the club in the mid-seventies, I thought Arsenal and Chelsea away were the more eagely anticipated and I still can't bring myself to see Tottenham as such a big deal. In fact I had a lot of sympathy for the few Tottenham people in Camden/Islington when I moved from E15 to NW5. I was at school in a sea of Goonerism and got on quite well with the handfull of Totters there. More recently though things have got a little more heated but in many ways the clubs are similar. Both had crazy boards (though we've had fewer managers), both have always liked to play the game as it should be played, both have massively underachieved though the totts have often been seen as more delusional in their expectations. :D For me the East/West London Derby was the most intense and our annual visit to Highbury not far behind. Dear old Millwall were our long standing traditional rival, being orginally neigbours, but they have usually played in a different division to us and their gates/status have always been on the low side. To the non WHU reader I wonder if some fans feel some other traditional rivalries are often hyped up and can't be bothered to go along with it. :o

I've got a mate who is a hardcore spurs fan and is also a bit tasty with his fists so I take what he says seriously :o , and he swears to me that their big derby is against Chelsea .

Funny that is Scouse mate, I've a Chelsea mate who's handy as well, he says the same :D

Perhaps they've met down the Kings Rd or North London somewhere to discuss the fine art :D
