Another mutual consent departure. Any thoughts on who is going to replace him?

Apparently Shearer has ruled himself out? Wise man!

Its a done deal.

And that man is.......................................

HARRY REDKNAPP :o

Yeah, he's odd's on, but he probably had a wager on himself before the prices started coming down.

As for Shearer, he's not going to risk his reputation just yet, it just shows that for all his posturing and preening, he's full of <deleted>.

For Harry, this could be one job that he doesn't suceed in, until the fans get there golden boy in the managers chair all the usual <deleted> will continue.

I really can't see why Harry R would want to manage the Magpies - it looks like the kiss of death to me and my advice to him (should he ring me) would be "Don't touch it Harry, wait for the Anfield job mate"...... :o

Half way through the season, 12 points safely away from the relegation zone and the manager is (by mutual consent) sacked. What the hel_l is going on, and what do people expect? What do Newcastle supporters really expect with injuries to key players and without Chelsea type spending power...

How long will the new manager get....10 games?

Anyway, they deserve to go the way of Leeds for the booing of Gerrard :o

If you are Reading, Wigan or Fulham then being 12 points away from safety at this point of the season is acceptable. But when you've spent big money on players like Owen, Barton and Martins, are regularrly getting crowds of 52000 and your manager is one of the top 5 paid managers in the league then I think that the Newcastle fans are entitled to expect something better than the crap football that Allardyce was producing.

I keep hearing that it was a 3 to 5 year job. Fair enough. However, after 8 months of Big Sam's reign there was zero sign of improvement and if anything the team was worse.

Newcastle are critisied for continually changing their manager. The problem is that the last 3 managers appointed by Fat Freddie were bad appointments. This will be Ashley and Mort's first managerial appointment. I hope that they can get it right this time.

I think Sam should have been given to the end of the season.

You would think so wouldn't you?

Unless they have a relacement lined up they think might not be available later?

I think that Southampton fans may disagree with you. But seeing as Andy Penders is one of them, I have little sympathy :D

A few weeks ago Harry Redknapp (concerning the England Manager job) said that he was happy at Portsmouth and did not need the money and aggro attached to the job. Now, I know that he was never a serious contender for the England job and he could afford to say that, but the Newcastle job is just as dangerous, reputation wise, as the England job, so now we can see just exactly what his words are worth.

Personally I think that he would be stupid to give up a good job in an area that he loves so much to move to Newcastle where he knows he's got till the end of the season (at most) to impress.

There won't be a shortage of applicants though, what a cushy post for someone that wants it. Sign a 4 year contract, do nothing for a few months, and walk away with a few million in the bank.

Where do I sign?

What i don't understand is, how can it be by mutual consent when he is quoted on the BBC as saying "I'm disappointed but I wish them all the best for the future. It was a shock, I didn't expect it."

I'm sure you would expect it, if it was mutual :o

Quite Rediculous, in my opinion, how many games was he in charge?

But he should have expected it, didn't he get the Chairmans vote of Confidence a few days earlier :o

I am not as confident as I was 3 days ago.

I was told by lets say 'someone in the know' that Redknapp had already been spoken to about the job and had indicated that if Big Sam were to leave, then he would take the job. Hence my interest at 16/1 :D However with all these denials who knows whats going on out there :D

I said Martin Jol Ken...I don't think Jose will like the old up there either !!!

Allardyce....Next manager for Australia !!! They're still looking, right?

Definitely. Laughable fans and a laughable club. Hire someone who promises to deliver in 3 years or so, then give them half a season. Geordies just seem to enjoy whingeing, I think they're scared of anyone actually being successful, so nip it in the bud before it might happen. :o

Took him a few seasons to turn Bolton around. As a club Bolton have much less resources, but he did it. Where would ManU be now if the managers and fans had treated Fergusson in the same way? Took him a few years to bring and sustain success at ManU. Unfortunately he did it tho' :D

When Sam took over Newcastle they had just finished 13th, 43 points from 38 games. When he left they were 11th, 26 points from 21 games. Looks like a small improvement to me. :D Certainly not a disaster for someone they brought in who committed to a longer term plan. Realistically no-one will turn around Newcastle and their fair-weather fans in half a season.

What was the excuse for Keegan, Daglish, Hullit, Robson...etc? Must be down to the club set up, and probably not helped by the fans either.

I'd love to see Shearer take it. Would be interesting to watch "one of their own". How long before the fans turned on him? I hear Sammy Lee might be interested... :D

It's about time Shearer actually took the job, rather than go around undermining all the managers that have been there in recent years. Lets see how good he really is, rather than continuing to be a big fish in a small pond. I don't think anyone will get a fair crack until the "Great overated one" takes the job. After the England job, it has to be the second most difficult job in England at present.

From yesterday's Guardian

""

After Redknapp's done his reconnaissance to see whether Whitly Bay sands provide as pleasant a dog-walking venue as Poole harbour, he'll take the job, buy some Africans (with the money Ashley has made attiring the whole of the North to look like shop assistants in J-D sports), finish up 8th, then endure a difficult second season during which the man-breasted Toon fans'll start their bewilderingly inane call for Mr Alan 'Charisma' Shee-Rah to cut short his world lecturing tour on how to sneakily elbow centre halves and lead them to the Promised Land. 'Arry's already comic twitch will go into overdrive, like Alex Higgins trying to catch mosquitos with his eyelids, preventing him even from driving to the ground to receive the news of his sacking, whereupon he'll spend the rest of his days explaining in his column for Nuts what kind of parlous state the club was in when he got there and how he did a great job...

Newcastle United - problems as unsolvable as the Israel-Palestine situation. ""

WAS HOPING HE'D STILL BE THERE FOR THE STOKE GAME _STILL SMARTING WE DIDN'T WIN

Aye bit of a bugger ain't it!

But most of there midfield are in Africa now. . . so hope isn't all lost . . and it'll also take a miracle to get that bunch playing half decently.

Who is being caretaker?

Thats exactly my point though Mr Boj. Until he takes that job, any manager who goes there is going to be in the shadow of Shearer, and Shearer almost seems to revel in it.

Yes a small improvement statistically but if you take into account that Newcastle still have to visit Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa, Pompey, and Tottenham then there hasn't really been any improvement. Certainly not if judging by the performances on the pitch. The fact that Derby have achieved 4 out of their 7 points against Newcastle pretty much sums things up.

At the end of the day Sam was an average manager who had great belief in himself. His managerial tactics revolved around playing percentages. Eliminating flair and hoping to score from set pieces wasn't going to win over the fans. The point he was missing was that Arsenal/Man Utd score goals through flair/creativity and have an organised defence. Under Allardyce Newcastle had neither. :D

I think that Allardyce will be back soon. I heard that the Republic of Ireland want him as their next manager. That could be the ideal job for him. His methods are very similar to Jack Charlton's so Big Sam may be more suited to this job..

Comparing Newcastle's results so far this season against the corresponding matches last season (substituting promoted teams for relegated teams) they have scored 3 goals more, conceded 13 goals more and have 4 points less.

For the "Big Four" clubs, Man U have 2 points less, Chelsea have 1 point less, Arsenal have 11 points more, and Liverpool have 3 points more.

The biggest gainers are Man City with 19 points more, and the biggest losers are Reading with 11 points less.

The three clubs promoted from the Championship last season all have less points than the 3 clubs that were relegated from the Premier League. Sunderland 1 point less than Sheff U, Birmingham 1 point less than Charlton, and Derby have a whopping 10 points less than Watford had. Watford finished last season with 28 points.

This is comparing the matches the teams have played, with the matches played against the same opponents last season, not just the first 21 matches of the season.

Redknapp turns down Newcastle manager's job

LONDON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp decided on Saturday to turn down an offer to succeed Sam Allardyce as Newcastle United manager.

'I've had a great offer, to manage a fantastic club like Newcastle. It was a terrific opportunity,' Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

'But I'm happy here...this is where I enjoy being, this is my club, it would be too big a wrench to leave here.'

Allardyce parted company with Newcastle by mutual agreement on Wednesday after only eight months at St James' Park.

Redknapp, 60, was the Premier League club's first choice. Other names linked with the job include former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer and Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes.

Assistant manager Nigel Pearson has been put in temporary charge of Newcastle for Saturday's league match against champions Manchester United.

'This is a club I feel comfortable at...I've got a great relationship with the fans, with the owner and (chief executive) Peter (Storrie),' Redknapp added.

'I've brought players in here, persuaded them to come to Portsmouth, sold the club to them and to walk away from them now when we're doing do well, it wouldn't be right.'

Portsmouth are eighth in the Premier League table and still in contention for a UEFA Cup place.

Newcastle, who are 11th, have not won a major domestic honour for more than half a century and have seen a string of big names come and go without bringing trophy success in recent years.

Ossie Ardiles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Gullit, Bobby Robson, Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder have all had a try. But only Keegan got close to meeting the high expectations of Newcastle fans with his exciting side of the mid-1990s, who went close to a first league title since 1927.

Anyone believe what Redknapp is saying?

Pretty sure, that he's holding out for some more brown envelopes stuffed with cash. I'm sure that Southampton fans will be laughing about his loyalty, etc, etc.... afterall, he walked out once before on Portsmouth to go to their biggest rivals.

Ther is something not right here.

I was told (reliably) that he had already accepted in principal, the job, when Allardyce left.

Then we have all these smoking mirrors, about no contact etc etc, which is BS.

Who knows anymore?
