Two injured in ‘visa run’ smash

RANONG: One man suffered a broken leg and another a broken nose when a minivan traveling from Phuket to Ranong on a “visa run” collided with a a six-wheeled water truck on Friday.

Pol Sub Lt Chatchai Pongsingto, of Ranong Town Police Station, told the Gazette that the accident happened on Paknam-Ranong Rd at about 12:20 pm.

The van, owned by Andaman Club Co Ltd, was carrying seven foreigners and a Thai from Phuket to the Andaman Club Pier, the jump-off point to the Andaman Club hotel and casino on Thahtay Kyun Island in Myanmar.

Sub Lt Chatchai said that Raoul Alexander Dieter Wildt, from Germany, suffered a broken leg, and Jae Hyun Kang, from South Korea, sustained a broken nose in the accident.

He explained that the driver of the water truck rounded a bend in the road to find himself head-on with the minivan. Both the water truck driver and the minivan driver swerved to avoid a head-on smash, but the rear ends of their vehicles collided.

“The water truck suffered little damage, but the minivan was damaged at the rear of the left-hand side, and its rear window was smashed,” he said.

“We have not yet charged anyone. We are waiting to see how serious the victims' injuries are, which will take at least a week,” he added.

Mr Wildt and Mr Kang were were transferred from Ranong Hospital to Bangkok Phuket Hospital late on Friday afternoon. Both are still under observation.
