MiniVDO: The Phuket Governor held a party at his residence to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday.

A grand garden reception called the ‘League of Nations Party’ in celebration of HM the King’s birthday was held at the governor’s residence last night, Thursday December 6th. Phuket Governor Nirund Kalayanamitr joined local officials of all related agencies, and invited foreign dignitaries, diplomats, representatives and local residents to join the special occasion. The grand reception was held from 6.30pm onwards. It was estimated around 1,200 people attended the reception while over 100 booths of food and beverage from local hotels in Phuket were put up. The evening party featured royally composed songs and performances in honour of HM the King, and firework displays.

On December 5th, which was HM the King’s 80th Birthday, hundreds of sailing participants and organizers of the 21st Phuket King’s Cup Regatta gathered at the Phuket Orchid Resort in Karon to celebrate the auspicious occasion. The candle lighting ceremony took place joining the whole nation to wish for another healthy and prosperous year for the beloved monarch. The Phuket’s King’s Cup regatta is an annual event held during the week of HM the King’s birthday. It was very well attended by sailors from across the world racing on 103 boats taking part this year. The regatta is also recognized as the most prestigious in Asia. Yesterday Thursday December 6th was the lay or rest day for crews, before the final races takes place today and tomorrow morning, starting from the Kata Bay.

Phang-Nga Governor Wichai Praisa-Ngob led officials, private business representatives and the general public for a candle lit ceremony in tribute to HM the King for his 80th Birthday Anniversary at the Somdej Phra Srinakarin public park in town. The ceremony was followed by spectacular fireworks displays. In the morning the Governor led people to offer alms to 81 Buddhist monks in tribute to HM the King. The participants also helped plant trees at the public park of Somdej Phra Srinakarin as well.

A large number of marine lives were released into sea at Ban Bang Khontee in Rawai sub-district of Phuket in tribute to HM the King’s Birthday Anniversary. They comprised two million shrimps, 30,000 sea bass, 9 sea turtles, and 30,000 crabs. The activity was co-organized by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Thai Environment Institute having Phuket Vice Governor Smith Palawatwichai presiding over the release ceremony. The program was part of the department’s public awareness’ campaign for local people to appreciate the natural resources value and the conservation. It is launched in 5 locations which are Samut Sakhon, Chumporn, Phang-Nga, Krabi and Phuket’s Chalong bay. It is also expected to add to the diversity of the nature.

Phang-Nga Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob led local residents of Lor Yoong in Phang-Nga’s Thakuathung district to release 1 million baby aqua animals into fresh waters. A number of fresh water fish were also passed on to local community leaders to release into a public pond in the community to increase the number of fish in the community. The activity was in tribute to HM the King for his 80th Birthday Anniversary.

MiniVDO: The Silpakorn University presented a plan design for the Phya Thai hospital’s renovation focusing on green areas, while the CEO of PPAO is confident that the hospital can be opened at the end of next year.

An architect from Silpakorn University in Bangkok who were hired to carry out the plan to redesign the old hospital in Koh Sireh area presented their plan to the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization or PPAO’s management led by its CEO Anchalee Vanich Theppabutr, at the PPAO’s meeting room yesterday. Mrs. Anchalee explained that the meeting is the second time as the PPAO has asked the team to add more green areas for the hospital to provide more green and recreational areas for patients’ families. Mrs. Anchalee further stated that the estimated budget for the renovation work and medical tools acquisition will be around 200 million baht. After the design is finalized, then they will seek to carry out the work which will then take about 10 months. The CEO of PPAO is confident that the new hospital will be opened for service in the first phase in late 2008.

Phang-Nga forensic police inspected the scene where gunmen used an M. 16 to shoot into the Phang-Nga Provincial Administration Organization CEO, Bamrung Piyanamvanit’s house on the night of December 5th. Police said the incident was probably to threaten Bamrung who is a local politician. Mr. Bamrung was reported to be inside the house during the incident. The shooting was in the 70 metre range. Police focus on 3 main factors as motives for the shooting. They are national political conflicts, local political conflicts and business. Police are working on finding culprits to bring into justice.

Prince of Songkhla University, Phuket Campus invites the general public and students to visit and participate in many activities arranged during its ‘PSU Open Week’ being held for two more days today Friday and tomorrow Saturday December 7-8th at the PSU campus in Kathu district of Phuket. The event features many different interesting food and beverage stalls, games and fun activities, academic shows and entertaining performances in the evening, including a concert by a Singaporean band called ‘re:mix’, with a leading violinist Foo Say Ming playing new and old music. There are also exhibitions on various interesting subjects from the university’ students including HM the King’s philosophy of self sufficiency economy principles, Information Technology and the environment, hotels and hospitality businesses. Demonstrations and training sessions plus special talks are also arranged. The most popular are probably the students’ international Food and Beverage booths and handicraft stalls for visitors to enjoy and buy items. We talked to a student, Suki at the Spanish food stall, where we first met the visiting Cuban Ambassador to Thailand, Maria Luisa Fernandez, who told us her impressions of PSU, and the Thai students and public during this auspicious week: ......
