Villagers in the Bang Rong community in Phuket’s Paklok sub-district yesterday afternoon used big piles of sand and tents to block off traffic to the Bang Rong pier. The protest occurred as the local people there oppose the new residents who are not locals and have encroached on mangrove areas. In some cases they collect parking fees from boat passengers which is also done by locals. The conflict then led to body assaults. The road block caused several vehicles to be trapped at the pier while the passenger ferry from Koh Yao had to re-route to the Ao Por pier. The protesters demanded that people who live in the community must follow the rules there, and that a responsible agency takes legal action against encroachers and that all boats using this pier must leave at slow speed. The responsible agency and the villagers discussed and drew up an agreement. The road was reported to re–open yesterday.
