Can someone please enlighten me as to why Thai people like to pick there noses in public and why so many?

I have been here for a few years now and I have started to do the same thing.

Is it a sort of a virus thing that is going around?

My baby is only six months old and she has started picking already.

After my nose is all picked out I find myself picking my feet.

Maybe I should start wearing socks again.

I know that some of you would find this a bad subject, but I need to know for the baby's sake .

Or maybe I should put cloves on her hands?

HHHMmmmmm yes the old nose picking question. Thai men grow their small pinkie nail super long just for this activity. But you are not a fully fledged member of the NPs until you start to pick while straddled across your motorbike outside Central and you use the bike mirror to squeeze your blackheads in between picking :o

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww..................

Funny thing is they are always very anxious to hide their tooth picking activities behind their hands

doesn't make sense

whereas we usually pick nose privately and don't mind who sees us teeth picking

This is a most fascinating thread

makes my New year quite exciting. :o

Happens all the time.

Noses are picked on the way to the buffet where about .5% of Thais wash their hands before diving into the very same buffet. :D

Now you know why it's only 49 baht per person. :o

i was speaking to an older man one day when he stuck his porky finger up his nose and had a good old dig around in there. couldnt believe it. i said 'are you right there?' and he just had a blank look on his face. 'did you get it?' i asked him.

NFI mate....NFI. gross.

Carefull Tony you are starting to sound like weho. :D

Maybe they're following the old line.........You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose and settling for second best. I guess they just view it as another necessary bodily function like p1ssing. It has to be done so let's get on with it, if you all want to watch then go ahead if that's what you like.

Another one from a bumper sticker "It aint how you pick yer nose but what you do with the booger that counts". Buffet salad bar anyone? :o

I say we are lucky they don't have big packages, or they would stand around adjusting themselves all day.

I apologize to those that have not seen Seinfeld, but this thread references 3 different Seinfeld episodes:

(1) Papi the pizza chef hand-making a pizza for Jerry after Jerry sees him pee in the toilet and leave without washing his hands;

(2) George getting caught "double-dipping": dipping a chip, eating half of it, then dipping the chip back in for more;

(3) Jerry sitting in a cab scratching his nose but his potential model-girlfriend sees it from the other side from her car, thinking he picked his nose. He exclaimed over and over "it wasn't a pick!" but she dumps him because of it.

The Thais have nothing over the Chinese in Singapore. "Digging for gold" is the norm. Blowing your nose while leaning over and pinching one nose and hoping it doesn't get on yourself is another. Another fine one is seeing young couples lovingly popping each others' facial zits while riding public transport.

Actually, as somebody previously suggested, this is one of the best threads on Thai Visa Phuket in awhile :-)

And how about the girl on Kata Beach, with her belly button filled with salt, into which she was dipping her crisps.

One question.

Is it okay for me to fart lovingly sharing the smells of my garlicky onion filled dinner with the folks i am travelling in a car with?

An Old Poem;

The fart, 'tis a splendid thing

It gives the belly ease

Warms the bed you're lying in

And drives away the fleas.

Nose picking is nothing,come to China where everyone hocks up and spits between you feet whilst holding a conversation.Chinese grow their pinkie nails to pick their noses then dive around in their ears then look to see what they've found.Was also in Hainan a few months ago saw a couple on the beach she was squeezing blackheads on her bf back.That was revolting.

Then again what is the fascination of foreign guys scratching their balls in public or belching loudly?Each to their own nothing surprises anymore.
