my bf and i (australians) are looking to travel to thailand in march, probably purchasing a return ticket to go home in june.

we want to saty for about three months and have heard of the 3 x 30 day stamp thing. go to a border and renew for 30 days. we want to do that twice then go home. do we need proof of onward travel within 30days?? this would be really inconvenient if we purchase a return ticket for june.. can anyone tell me about the border runs as well, is it easy/safe/cheap? thanks heaps in advance guys!

You should buy a tourist visa which provides a 60 day stay that can then be extended 30 days more with a visit to an immigration office and fee of 1,900 baht.

If you try to travel without a visa you should have an outbound ticket within 30 days of arrival. Some airlines will not allow you to board without it. Much easier to just get a visa before travel - you have plenty of time.

Get one before you fly. Cannot get one once you arrive.

6. Visa Fees (as of 26 August 2003) :

* Transit Visa - $35 for each entry

* Tourist Visa - $45 for each entry

* Non-Immigrant Visa - $90 for single entry or multiple entry $225 to be utilized within one year

You lose your current stay if you leave the country. You can retain it at a cost of 1,000 baht purchase of a re-entry permit prior to travel. Once you are down to 30 days or less before home bound travel you can safely use 30 day visa exempt entry if you want to travel. You can also buy tourist visas that allow more than one entry but cost will be $45 each (this is Oz $).

thanks, very useful info, also found out i can get visa in brissy which is convenient. i think that if i go elsewhere in SE asia i'll do it so that i can use 30 day stamp to avoid extra visa cost. thanks all.

what countries around thailand are interesting to visit? and are there any visa/entry requirements for them?

You can fly to Philippines from Bangkok with a low cost carrier called Cebu Pacific. You can pick up cheap flights on their web site. No Visa needed you get 21 days visa on arrival. You can also fly to China with various low cost carriers, One to Go come to mind with cheap flights to HK. Visa required for China. Also Air Asia fly to Malaysia and Vietnam. No visa required for Malaysia but you will need to have one for Vietnam. You can apply for visa's in bkk for Vietnam and China. Cambodia is in striking distance on the bus from bkk, not sure about visa requirement there but I think you can get one at the border, same applies to Loas and Burma.
