Nurse falls down Phu Chifah Mountain to death

CHIANG RAI: -- A nurse was killed after she fell down a 15-metre ravine from a rock on top of Phu Chifah Mountain Sunday morning.

Police said Phantita Sakhonjan, 26, accidentally fell down when she and friends climbed up the rock where tourists often post for photos with rising sun.

The ravine is about 15-metre deep and officials took hours to retrieve her body.

She was a nurse from Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok.

This is like the first time ever of someone been kill at Phu Chi Fah! Each year we got many tourist going to but never have any accident at all.

Chiang Rai province must make an prevention of this. Like building rails or something. Just terrible!

I'm surprised that this doesn't happen regularily. We were there last month, and climbing the slippery mud and rock strewn pathway from the parking area to the summit (about 1.5 km) in the dark before sunrise is no easy feat!

When we walked back down and saw the pathway and terrain in the daylight, I almost couldn't believe that we had actually navigated it on the way up.

I have stood on the spot from which she fell, I remember making the comment that I was surprised to see no railings. It can be especially dangerous due to the fact that it is common to arrive in the dark, as hikers go to see the sunrise.

Very sad.

When it comes to security it is very international in the end. You always have to have an accident before there will be any security measurements. Stupid, but that's how it has been working as long as I have been around.

Very sad.

I have been living in Chiang Rai for 9 years. I visited Phu Chi Fah for the very first time last December, walked up the trail to that hill - took the customary photos, stood on that very spot where the nurse fell and remarked how dangerous this place could be.

Just imagine hordes of people jostling for position during peak tourist hours. Scary!

It is a breathtaking view - that I have to admit and can now see why people are attracted to that place.

Pity the local Or Bor Tor has not yet done something about it. Let's just hope they come up with something that does not ruin the natural beauty of Phu Chi Fah.
