I bought the car and it was registered in my name, it's a little bit more fuss with copying pages of passport etc, but no problem at all.

The dealers I bought from do the paperwork, my last one was Toyota in Khon Kaen. I bought a Fortuner in my name 2 years ago and was on a 30 day stamp at that time, you do need to go to Immigration to get a letter of residence, a few hoops to jump through, but it's in your name at the end of the jumping.

A few years ago one would need a Non Immigrant Visa to register a Car, but that was changed quite a while ago.

My understanding, at least in Pattaya though I did believe nationwide, that you could not get the letter from immigration without the non immigrant visa, not that you really needed the visa to buy the car, merely to get the letter. Now if you owned a condo, but arrived on a 30 day stamp, then I could see how that could be accomplished.

Clarification here would be useful.

It was no problem for me Torrenova, I have had to get several papers from Immigration in Pattaya myself over the years, driving license etc...Being on a 30 Day stamp never was a problem at that time, dunno if it's changed in Pattaya now though.

My last letter from Immigration was obtained in Chiang Khan Immigration in Loei province, that was for the registration of the Fortuner, also on a 30 Day stamp at that time.

I know different Immigration offices have different policies, for instance, did you know that there is no charge for this service in reality, yet Pattaya Immigration always charge a fee, in Chiang Khan it was free, when I asked about why it was free, the officer told me it should be free at every Immigration office. :o

I think Pattaya charge 200 baht, with no reciept of course as there is no official charge. :D

Still, I'm not gonna knock Pattaya Immigration as I got my retirement Visa there with no problem at all.

Wow! some solid info here. Photo copying of passport pages, residence letter and some hoops too jump through.Lets have some more meat on the bones!

Sounds like something from Arthur Daleys book of car purchasing in Thailand.

Copy passport pages

Immigration letter

Hoops to jump through

Wad of brown ones

Give a portion to dealers wife/daughter

Drive off in Fortuner

Easy peasy me old mucker.

Tread easy over here fm2002. Last week an old ex -pat asked me why I handed over my passport when I withdrew money from my savings account book at the local Bangkok Bank, as he has never done so.

On further scrutiny he has joint account & his TW does everything for him. He has never even got close to a bank counter.

There are many villages who do not know their folk are missing.

Does somebody knows if the Vigo will get new face-lift soon ??

RUMOUR is that the two door trucks are getting 'suicide' doors like the Mazda/Ford. Good idea for easy access.

Was told yesterday by the Pattaya Nissan dealer that it is very easy to obtain a residence certificate from Immigration. All you need is a letter from where you are living (my friend said he knew somebody who got a letter from the hotel he was staying at), turn this in with completed application form and 200 baht. No work permit needed. Will attempt today.
