Congratulations for Bolton. Making history...

Atletico Madr vs Bolton 0 - 0

Date:21/02/2008

Venue: Vicente Calderon

Attendance: 30,000

Referee:Jacek Grana

WANDERERS CREATED history as they held Atletico Madrid to a goaless draw at the Vicente Calderon Stadium to progress through to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup where they will face Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon over two-legs. Gary Megson's men performed stoically in what was an intimidating enviroment and fully deserved the result which sees them advance to the furthest stage they have been in European competition. It was a match with few chances as Bolton's defence was resolute throughout. Wanderers made three changes from the side that won the first leg 1-0 at the Reebok. Danny Guthrie did not travel due to picking up an injury and with one eye on the important clash on Sunday with neighbours Blackburn Rovers, Stelios, Gavin McCann and Joey O'Brien came into the side with El-Hadji Diouf and Ivan Campo dropping to the bench.

Atletico made their intentions known from the kick-off and after only 5 minutes, Jurado was lucky to escape with just a yellow card following a late lunge on Nicky Hunt. Bolton's first chance came to Stelios early on in the half but the acrobatic Abbiati tipped over the European Cup Winner's close range effort for a corner. Atletico tried to put the visiting side under pressure throughout and although Bolton defended deep the La Liga side never created any clear cut chances. Nevertheless, Bolton just showed why they have kept six clean sheets in eight (even one of the goals was offside against Pompey) with heroic defending throughout. Andy O'Brien took a ball in the face from a powerful volley and Gary Cahill is firmly establishing himself as a f ans' favourite with his no nonsense style.

The 2nd half continued just the way the first half had played out, with Madrid spending a lot of time in the Bolton final third but without any real penetration, despite sporting the likes of Forlan, Reyes and Garcia. In fact the ineffective Garcia was replaced by De Las Cuevas not long into the 2nd half but Gary Megson almost straight away threw on Campo and Diouf for Stelios and McCann which tipped the balance of the game more in Bolton's favour with Campo holding up play well and Diouf making long runs and stretching Madrid's tired legs.

The final 15 minutes was a tense affair for the 3000 plus Wanderers fans who travelled in force to the Spanish capital, but Bolton managed to run the clock down with even Abdoulaye Meite playing a semi attacking role for the last 5 minutes after replacing Joey O'Brien. There was simply no way through for Atletico and the travelling faithful enjoyed a night to remember at the Vicente Calderon, and now look forward to a night in Lisbon to add to the other memorable nights in Munich and Madrid.

Atletico Madrid - 0 Bolton 0 (1-0 to Bolton on Aggregate)

Brave Bolton reach last 16

Trotters secure clash with Sporting Lisbon

Last updated: 22nd February 2008

Bolton pulled off a goalless draw against Atletico Madrid to book a place in the last 16 of the Uefa Cup.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg at the Reebok Stadium, Gary Megson's side produced a perfect defensive performance in the Spanish capital to frustrate the home side and claim a famous scalp.

The result was enough to send the Trotters through to a meeting against Sporting Lisbon in the next round - the Portuguese outfit 5-0 aggregate winners over Basle.

Despite their first-leg advantage, the odds were still stacked against Bolton with Atletico never having lost at home to an English club in European competition.

The Spaniards had also won their last seven European ties at the Vicente Calderon, scoring 16 goals and conceding just one in the process.

Wanderers more than held their own during a disappointing first half, with Atletico clearly missing the attacking guile of suspended striker Sergio Aguero.

Difficult

Playing with Kevin Davies as a lone frontman, Bolton made it difficult for the hosts to create many clear-cut chances in the opening 45 minutes.

And it was the Trotters who almost took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes when Stelios Giannakopoulos found space on the right side of the area, and home goalkeeper Christian Abbiati needed to be alert to tip over the Greek midfielder's well-struck shot.

Aside from that effort, Atletico made all the running in the first half, Luis Garcia shooting over with only Jussi Jaaskelainen to beat.

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan also had a decent opening in the 22nd minute but he headed wide from 10 yards out.

The second half started where the first left off, with Atletico pushing for the breakthrough.

No problem

Full-back Mariano Pernia tried his luck from outside the area but it was no problem for Jaaskelainen, while Luis Garcia curled a shot well wide.

Forlan, Pernia and Jurado then saw three efforts bravely blocked in rapid succession.

Atletico continued to push forward in search of the goal that would possibly send the game to extra-time, but the Bolton defence stood firm.

The Spaniards appealed for a penalty with 10 minutes remaining when Forlan's cross struck Jlloyd Samuel, but Polish referee Jacek Granat was unmoved.

Home goalkeeper Abbiati twice ventured upfield in the closing stages for a corner and free-kick, but Bolton comfortably saw off the danger to celebrate a famous success.

Oh dear ... two stabs at the cherry and all you ended up with was Bolton and Villa!!

It's like going out looking for a pizza and ending up with a choice of a cheese and onion sarnie or a pack of quavers.

I think he had the choice of Newcastle or Sunderland, but chose Sunderland as it's closer to Devon. :D

True. I think Sunderland was something like 450 miles from Tavistock when we first drove down there late in 1978. I had already been converted by then. My dad packed me off to school with a Sunderland bag even when I lived on North Tyneside. My mam is Scottish and she had the cheek to send me to school with a Scotland school bag in the run up to the '78 World Cup finals. B) I had a hard childhood. The rest of my dad's side of the family are from Gateshead and North Tyneside ... they all support the Mags. Not really sure what drove my dad to follow Sunderland, but it has made life a challenge for me since I was old enough to say 'Sun'lun' ... it's been all downhill since then ... and uphill too!

My younger brother started off supporting Sunderland, but my repeated teasing of him :D when he was young led him to rebel and follow Swindon Town (since many of my mam's side of the family live there). It was hard for him to maintain interest and by the time he was old enough to drink, chase women and fall asleep in the neighbour's garden, he had chosen to follow the oval-shaped game of rugby instead. Daft lad. :D

I used to have some good conversations with my dad about Sunderland, but as he is going through a tough time healthwise at the moment his memory is shot to bits. Big shame ... I don't think supporting Sunderland will be quite the same again. :D

Obviously I don't get to many games over there now, but all being well, will be up in Sunderland for the game against the Smogmonsters in April. People can say all they like about watching a game in a pub or in the comfort of their home with a few beers ... but there is nothing to beat having a couple of pre-match beers, some banter, chips, mushy peas and gravy, before heading off to the match ... win, lose or draw ... it's a canny day out. :burp:

Totally agree, I do miss the freezing weather, the weak tea and the shitty pasties, unless you are in Cornwall where it's all good. :o

Bolton deserve to go down after that 2nd half performance against 10 men Arsenal. Can't believe they threw a 2 nil advantage away like that, they honestly looked like they wanted to lose?! It was agonising to watch :o

Posted

Don't worry. You still have to play us at home. We won't be safe by then. I have followed Sunderland too long to expect us to be safe before the last day of the season.

Comical own goal for Arsenal's winner today.

There was a wee bit of rain up there too!

Sorry to say it but I think Bolton are going to be relegated.

All Sam Allardyce built up over the last few seasons thrown away.

When Anelka went to Chelsea why didnt they sign a replacement ?

And Gary Megson as manager....come on.....failure at Norwich,Stockport,Notts Forest & Leicester....not a complete disaster at WBA but two promotions & one relegation in successive seasons. When Bryan Robson replaced him he managed to keep WBA up and he's hardly been a success as a manager !

Next season no derbies against United,City & Blackburn.......Preston & Blackpool instead!

Notts Forest ???? :o No such team mate.

Mugson was a complete disaster at Nottingham Forest. Took us into L1 & very nearly L2 until he fell on his sword. I don't think you can put all the blame on Mugson, the short sighted board need to take their fair share of the responsibility as well.
