Exercise Respirators

Remember last years air

pollution?

Who could forget it?

By Jeremy Gissop

As a regular cyclist all my life I was very alarmed to

find myself in the March/April period last year

wheezing as I cycled along due to the ridiculous level

of air pollution present The pollution is caused by

smoke from the vegetation burning mixed with the

ever present pollution from the traffic. The combination

of these factors, according to an article in the

Bangkok Post last March, causes Chiang Mai to have

one of the highest rates of lung cancer in the World at

139 deaths per 100,000 people.

To hopefully help me not to become one of those

statistics my wife has imported a limited number of

sophisticated high quality respirators. These are

designed for use by cyclists and athletes in European

cities. These respirators will ensure that my family

and friends can continue with their exercise

programmes through the forthcoming pollution

season.

The masks filter out the micro particles which can

lodge permanently in the lungs.

The filtration process also filters out hydrocarbons,

nitrogen and lead oxides, sulphur dust, black smoke,

Sub Micron Particulates including pollen and clay

dust.

At the next Expats Club meeting on 23rd Feb my wife

will have a limited number of these pollution masks

for sale at Bt 1999 each. If there is a demand it is

possible to obtain some more stock quickly so that

people can continue their exercise programmes

without damaging their health.

Don your Gas Mask, so that you too can look like Crazy Tony! :o

Cool !

Well, sounds like a very fair offer.

I say we encourage people who want to wear masks, but still stay in our fair city!

I am hoping that this season will be a lot clearer than it was last year.

Thus far this year it has been stellar weather-wise, IMHO.

I should know, I'm a pool rat, I go to the pool every day.

We have had pretty much marvelous weather for the last month or so...

Crazy Tony is the supposed Vietnam Vet who dresses in combat fatigues with a Osama Bin Ladin beard and was the first person to start wearing a gas mask regularly in Chiang Mai about 15 years ago. I always knew that he was smarter than the rest of us! :o

And was it him I saw at the Hasher's Pub the other night who was puffing on a Montecristo #2 Torpedo, with a most comely lass at his elbow....just wondering..... :o

He is usually accompanied by two chimps and a freindly old slapper. :o

Haven't seen him in years UG. Not the easiest guy to know.

McSpicey was that the night we were there at the Hash Pub? I didn't see the man there but then again I don't remember much past the 3rd tequila at Tossers.

Tony is still around, but his Thai wife has tamed him to the point that he can eat in Fuji Japanese Restaurant without screaming at the the waitresses or trying to bargain about the price of his meal. His wife must be a saint! :o

With regard to the respirators available at the expats' club meeting, what is the designed usage time limit. Most seem to be from 7 to 12 hours before a refill is needed. Do you also have the refills and, if so, how much are they?

Top Quality respirators, filtering down to 2.5 micron are available from the 3M agent on Wualai road. They are just a couple of hundred Baht each.

Are any of these solutions compatible for swimming?

:o:D:D I doubt it....
