I've been buzzing around the island for a couple years on the bike with one of the 199thb specials. You know, plastic over styrofoam.

At Lotus and Big C I've seen some that are a little nicer, but there are no testing ratings on them, so really, they look the same to me just with nicer plastic on the outside.

Does Bell sell helmets in Thailand? Does anyone know where to get a real motorcycle helmet and how much thb am I looking at?

Hey Huggy!! :o

I found a proper motorcycle helmet but it is too big. It is brand new and unused. Grey Metallic, but it is rated.

Can sell it or you can get a new one. Just go north of the Traffic Lights at Tesco towards the Toyota place,

and look for the Harley Shop on the left. They have all sorts.

I paid 4000 for mine. Sell for 2500.

Good Luck

Open or closed face, Amanda? I get claustrophobia from a completely enclosed helmet.

Thanks !

I agree that wearing a cheap helmet is insane. But, for mots people it's all about saving paying a 300 baht fine at one of the police check points, and nothing at all to do with protecting the head.... insane...

If you are concerned with your Brain, 199baht is insane.

Typically just a show piece to get by the police, then I take it off :o

Just as our resident guru, LivinginKathu has mentioned....

If that's what you do then best stick with the 199 baht specials, and forget about protecting your life ... :D

The reason behind why I started the thread, thanks.

Still waiting on Amanda to get back to me on whether her helmet offered is enclosed or open face. Amanda? You out there?

Amanda? You out there?

Yes. Sorry, it is a proper helmet with a pop up face shield. Like the F1 Guys wear. It is not intended to fool

the boys in brown, it is intended to prevent severe brain/head injury. It sounds like you might not be interested

in this one. I have to get off my hogg to take it off and put it on.

I doesn't really make much sense to me to try and fool them. You are really just fooling yourself.

No speed limits, no fine for running red lights, or driving in the other lane during a red light or a high speed pass

in a school zone, however, the helmet law is really inforced. Except for children who are too young to drive,

they don't have to wear helmets.

I saw a guy on an big bike blow past 5 thai police like a Moto-GP racer, and instead of giving chase, they were all amazed and

impressed at his speed, and skill in the apex of the corner...but no one chased him.

Get one of those Old German War Helmets. Those look hot. With the chrome spike!!!

One thing I like about living in Thailand is that I have more freedom to do what I want to do than where I come from.

So please, everyone get away from telling me I'm insane, telling me I'm fooling myself, whatever.............my business, my choices thank you. The thread was just asking advice on where to go to find a good helmet. Can we stick to that?

Yes, I am looking for a real helmet for the reasons you guys are bombarding me with, your answers as to where I can find this are appreciated. As mentioned Amanda, I do not care for full face, thanks for getting back to me on that and I will take you up on the stopping by the Harley shop :o .

Thanks to all for "helpful" responses.

Huggy I actually do not know the cost of helmets in Thailand. But there has to be decent ones for 5-10,000 baht.. well worth it to save the old (young!!??) noggin...Really..truly..honestly FORGET anything under 5k baht. They will NOT hold up in an accident. Even though it didn't have a hard fall I am binning my £300 excellent X-Lite because it has just, days ago, gone down the road. Few scuffs, scrapes and the visor is wrecked. It did it's job and saved my old (!) noggin and grey matter...the bit that I have left that is! A cheap helmet would have not have done the job. If you want my helmet...you are welcome to it...still fine for a scooter!! I'll be over in a few weeks.

ps. Where to buy?? I saw a few shops near the Metropole circle in Phuket that sold helmets and I recognised 1 or 2 brands. Ones I trust are Arai/Shoei/X-Lite/Bell/AGV/Suomi/Nolan/Carberg/Schubert/Airoh/

Carberg are v good value. Is there an eBay site near Thailand?? Just make sure you get the size right. Shoei and X-Lite fit me while others in the same size do not! Careful! Run from plastic.and stick to at least fibre glass material. The old saying £10 head--£10 melmet. Yours I am sure is worth a lot more to you!!

Sorry HB my directions were pretty miserable. When you come out of the Metropole take the 2nd street...not the one to Robinsons....and before the one to Chalong/Chao Fa Rd. There are some shops w helmets along the left side down a bit. I will confirm this with my pal who knows it better than me!
