Suk - Pratunam Peak Hour. How Long?

I have another business trip to BKK coming up.

I have to spend a couple of days at the Amari Watergate in Pratunam and a couple of days at Bang Kapi/Huai Kwang (New Phetburi Road).

I don't really want to stay in either area, prefer to stay in Sukhumwit where I can catch up with mates at night.

Am I going to be able to get to either place for work, and back to the hotel afterwards from Sukhumwit?

Subway has a stop in Huai Khwang and one at Sukhumwit. You can connect to the Skytrain at the Asoke/Sukhumwit station. Much faster than taking a taxi.

As for Sukhumwit to Pratunam, the traffic is pretty bad between the two. I usally just take the Skytrain and get off at central world and then walk the few blocks to Pratunam.

get to either place from where?

if you are staying at the amari watergate get a taxi to and from sukhumvit, about 20 minutes 70 to 80 baht, depending on the time of day and where on sukhumvit you are going and what time you want to return.

if i was coming from sukumvit at night to the amari i would get the skytrain from asoke or nana station to chit lom station about 5 minutes then get a taxi to the hotel, about 5 minutes 35 to 45 baht.

i assume you mean new petchburi road, i dont know what hotel you will be in , however you can get a taxi from petchburi rd going up sukhumvit soi 21 to the skytrain/underground station at asok, right next to soi cowboy, or get off the underground and walk upstairs and get the skytrain to nana, the next station along.

going back at night from soi cowboy to petchburi road will take about 5 to 10 minutes.

if you tell me the name of the hotel on petchburi and where it is i can be more precise, also where do you intend meeting your mates, if its up soi 33 way then get the skytrain from asoke.

Just to clarify. I have to spend a couple of days working at the Amari Watergate, and a couple of days at our office 252-258 New Phetchaburi Road half way between Thong Lo and Sukhumwit Soi 63 (near Khlong Tan Railway Station). I assume that Khlong Tan is a slow train station and not really usable for commuting (I've only used normal rail for long distance). What is the best way to get betwixt Sukhumwit (about Soi 10) and here without using road transport??? I am thinking maybe motorsai to Phetchaburi MRT, then Asoke/Sukhumwit Interchange, then Nana.

Huay Kwang Metro Station is about 6.5 Km away from the office, and looking on Wiki, it seams that Bang Kapi is part of the expansion plan (orange line).

As for Pratunam, it just seems to be in the middle of nowhere for skytrain, so it is a case of getting of at Ratchathewi or Siam and a long, sweaty walk... (or motorsai)...

Any idea what the motorsai fare should be for these trips?

I try to avoid taxi's in peak hour, because it is rude to just get out and walk after they get stuck it a rotik for an hour.

Cheers,

Daewoo

thanks for the extra info, that helps.

to get from your office, to the amari watergate hotel, i would use the canal boat that goes up and down khlong saen saeb, there is a pier at thong lor that will take you to pratunam, about 20 minutes and about 16 baht, these boats start about 6:30 in the morning and run every 10 minutes or so, get off the boat at pratunam, you cant go any futher as its a changeover pier, walk to the amari watergate, about 10 minutes.

forget about khlong tan train station and the extension line, not yet built.

i believe the boat stops running about 6 o clock in the evening, so to get back i would get a motorcycle taxi to chitlom from the amari watergate, probably about 30 to 40 baht, then get the skytrain to ekami, then another motocycle taxi to your office.

any other questions, just fire away, if i can answer i will.

I have always wanted to have a turn of those Klong Boats, they look like the ducks nuts, but never been game... what is the story???

From Sukhumwit I just stand on the wharf under Sukhumwith Soi 3, when the boat comes along just hop on??? and wait for the girl (they're always girls) to come along and take 16 baht??? Do I need exact change or will they give me change for 20??? Of course I will have no idea where I have to get off, but that is part of the fun... (or not)

Thanks for the help everyone... I know that this is an expat forum, and unfortunately I haven't scored the dream job where I live in BKK just yet... and probably never will... so I appreciate being humoured by the rest of you guys... you all probably get a bit tired of tourists getting on here with the same questions over and over again...

correct, just hop on, if you are at the pier on suk soi 3 you want the boat that comes from your lh side, thats the one going to pratunam, the one coming from the right is coming from pratunam and heading past thong lor on its way to wat sri boon ruang( 2 stops after the mall bang kapi), yes the girl will have change, from soi 3 to pratunam should be about 10 or 12 baht, i hear the fares went up last week, so sorry dont know the exact fare.

yes those boats are the mutts nuts, get a bit busy at times, but one of the cheapest and quickest ways off getting around the city.

good luck.

The obvious solution are the ferry boats on the Khlong San Saeb.

(scroll down)

Interchange at Pratunam Pier; exit at Pratunam Pier and a 3 min. walk to the Amari Watergate. Not sure which pier is best for your Sukhumvit location?

Thanks for that... finally after hours and hours of googleing I was able to find this on The Thorn Tree

Well, the canal boats have been by far my most difficult bit of research for getting around BKK.

By looking at the map here;

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp...p;z=12&om=0

Which only came up when Google was running slow, so I tried AltaVista, I was able to discover that the building where our office is, practically has it's own pier. The pier is the same name as the building.

For Sukhumwit I guess I get off at Nana Pier (Sa Nana). For Pratunam I get off at Pratunam Pier.

Thanks everyone for your help. I hate being reliant of Taxi's... so many times I have been stuck in a jam for hours when I wish I could just get out and walk or wish I had been on the train...

daewoo,

are you talking about italthai pier, i see also the siemens building is right beside charn issara pier.

depending on where you are going in sukhumvit, you have a choice of 3 piers, asoke, which is a 5-10 minute walk to asoke underground/skytrain, right next to soi cowboy.

there is also nana chart( nana international) which is at the bottom of suk soi 15, 10 baht on a motorcycle taxi to sukhumvit road ( probably try and gouge you for 20) again a 10 minute walk to sukhumvit.

then there is nana nua which is on soi 3, again about a 10 minute walk to sukhumvit road.

correct for pratunam get off at pratunam, in fact you cant go any futher, the boat stops there.

the piers are all signposted i english as well as thai, if the boat isnt busy sometimes they will miss out stops if no one is waiting, so you need to ring the bell to let the driver know you want him to stop.

anymore questions, just ask, will try to answer.

Bendix says there is no traffic in Bangkok so no worries.

You can have a quik, safe ride, to any destination in the city by a pleasant professional in the transportation field...

....and best of all...NO SCAMS.

Incorrect. The western terminus is at Phan Fah Pier near the Golden Mount (Phu Kao Tong). You have to change boats at the Pratunam Pier, both eastbound and westbound; exit one boat and walk forward get in another if continuing on.

Just tell the fare collector which pier is your destination and they will both make sure the boat stops there and give you a heads up that it is approaching. You do need to be quite agile to use this form of transportation, and piers can be on either the left or right so ask as you'll need to make a hasty exit once the boat rams up against the dock.

then there is nana nua which is on soi 3, again about a 10 minute walk to sukhumvit road.

They are the ones... thanks for the help...

Yep... that's right :o ... I can't believe that when I get into a cab at the airport, and tell them where I want to go in Thai, they still try and scam me... but still, the cab fare from my home to the airport in Sydney (35mins) is about 3000THB, so I don't complain... (not to say I accept the scam... but I would rather they try and rip me off for 100THB than have a legit fare that is 30 times that to start with)... it is the traffic that I hate...

Sa ben yuu sai ruu yuu kwaa? Khrup... I'll make sure I have the Nike running shoes on.... vrrroooommmm...

Again, thanks for all of your help here people... it does help...
