OK, so me and my mates travelled to Samui for the 2nd year in a row

We picked March as it has the best weather

We arrived to find it overcast, cloudy and we had a few days of rain.

I am in no way bitching about it as being from Ireland i only know all too well the unpredictabilty of the weather

So first few nights we did the usual, beach drinking till midnight, then hit the livlier clubs/bars till 2 , then off to Solo or Sound till6/7

All was going well, meeting some great people, re-acquanting myself with all the beach seller and locals i met last year

Then coming out of Solo one night, in front of my eyes i see a tourist getting shot in both legs.

As far as i heard, he was o.k after an operation but the night after the police from Bangkok arrived, shut everything down at 2 for the next few nights.

O.K,I can see their reasoning for this but this just forced everybody onto the streets at 2 a.m (around Burger King / Seven Eleven)

In 2 nights i witnessed at least 7 different fights, with zero police presence.

It seems just as long as they shut the bars down, to hel_l with law and order

We got sick of the melee we witnessed on a nightly occurence and packed our bags to Pagnang which i must say was an excellent decision.

Much nicer beach, people way more relaxed. Great atmosphere and beach party.

But my experience in Samui has detracted me and i dont think i'll be heading back there again

Dont mean to offend anyone, just my 2 cents

with regards to the fights - I've said it before and I'll say it again.....the ar5ehole count on samui has definitely seen a sharp rise.

the words 'guns' & 'solo bar' go well together. :o I've not been in for ages but I've heard of a few shootings there in the past.

tbh I prefer 'sound' for a late night boogie/session/sleaze-fest.

Bad first...I mean,...SECOND, impression of Samui, eh? A lot of people seem to get shot, stabbed, killed around here that's for sure (if you read this forum long enough). Just don't get too drunk, don't offend anyone and stay alert and your chances for a good time vastly improve. Thankfully I haven't been a witness to any of the nastiness - - yet. I hope the rest of your stay is uneventful in that regard.

Dont get me wrong, i still think the place is paradise.

Locals and people are so friendly. The guys starting all the trouble were a bunch of new zealand guys who went around needlesslyt hitting people.

I asked one of them why they were doing it only to get the reply ''we're all roided (steroided) up and need to release testoserone'' at which stage he squared up to me, only for his mate to say ''its alright , he's irish''

he then proceeded to clock an australian for no apparent reason

You get your <deleted> everywhere, i just didnt think that in such a relaxed place people would get so excited and violent

What we talk about here?

About fightings and shootings in Chaweng after 2 am at the notorious places.

Chaweng is attracting a whole bunch of farang assh...es. But this is no reason to complain about Samui in general.

i'm not complaining, i still think the place is paradise and there is a lot more to the place than the nightlife

but lets face it, i am a tourist myself who is looking for good safe nightlife

i feel if there was more of a police presence on the streets at night, a lot of people would be deterred

Wow, that is an amazing story. Can't say I've ever heard that one before. How bizarre that people think that because they need to "release their testosterone' they can go around punching people. Sorry, but the only thing that makes this Samui relevant is the fact they happened to be acting out this way there. Seems like they could have just as easily (and most likely had already) been punching people out in Pattaya or Phuket. Guess they should count themselves lucky they didn't pick the wrong guy.

Pity that the police in this country aren't more pro-active about preventing crime rather than just showing up after the fact, is all I can say tho.

Or wait, could they have been Australian? Sounds kind of like a recent celebrity seen on Samui

The only time I see the police when I'm out is when they drop by a bar to get a white stuffed envelope.

I used to live someplace that had pairs of police patrolling the tourist areas all night. They were actually military conscripts and that was one of the assignments they could pull. Probably not possible around here but it couldn't hurt. Well, it shouldn't anyway.

Phuket police do a much better job, 24 hour manned police boxes at either end of Bangla Road and other busy tourist areas, the rate of crime in proportion to population must be massive, so the argument it could happen anywhere might be correct, just not as often as it does in Samui.
