I am interested in hearing any information, stories, places, towns, villages, places to stay, roads......ect...in the Northern uppermost area of thailand, aka the Golden Triangle.

All info., opinions, stories.....please pass them on!!

For me, the Golden Triangle itself was non-eventful....but the mountains of Chiang Rai blew me away. If you get a chance, get on a mini-van and head up to Poo-Chee-Fa (Points to the sky)...it's an amazing peak with an unforgetable view. Be sure to bundle up, cuz it gets a little chilly up there...and try and see a sunset opposed to sunrise....it's so cold up there early in the morning and the mist and fog is impenatrable.

Rent a small motorbike in Chiangrai (at ST for instance), drive to Chiangkong, stay there a night (at Victors guesthouse behind the police station for instance), eat a Korean barbeque in the evening (and have a nigthcap at She for instance)and drive on to Chiang Saen (have a nice massage for instance), stay there eventually for the night, go on to Maesai, by which you are passing Ban Sobrak, loose some money at the casino at the Burmese side and get another month visa-entry if you need it. And drive back to Chiangrai.

If you have time, do to the right in Ban Pasang just before Maechan and stay a night in Thoed Thai and visit its morning market and Khun Sa's barracks. Drive back over Doi Mae Salong to Maechan and back to Chiangrai. About threehundred kilometers. And you have seen the North.

Nice area, nice people (no americans :o ).

Have a nice trip!

:o Going into Burma through Maisai is an event in it's self! You think being the Thai are aggressive is trying to sell a farang something? The burmese there really don't take no for an answer :D to them it means come down 10 baht and try again. This boarder town is great for buying DVD's and music cd's and cigarettes if you find the right vendor. I was there one time and was approched by about 5 guys selling dirty movies for 40 baht a cd! I though ah!! what the heck bought 4. Upon my returning home I plugged one into my DVD player and well let just say I started to laugh as there was nothing dirty to watch as I was seeing a childrens cartoon! Yes the othe 3 DVD's had similar content all harmless.

Hahahaha buyer be where :D

There is a Casino there too and well let's just say the only winner there is the casino. I played black jack and the dealer beat me 20 times in a row! What odds?

Going to Lao is like visiting Thailand 30 years ago. I gave them 50.00 usd and they proceeded to give me stacks of money. I had to buy a small bag to carry there bank notes. There wasn't much for shopping and accomidation was different to say the least. Upon my leaving Lao I just handed the money to a skinny old woman and crossed the boarder.

So I guess what I'm saying is the best part of the Golden Triangle is Northern Thailand. It's safer and there lots to see and do!

I don't want to get all PC but isn't the money that people lose in the casino on the burmese side going directly into the pockets of the military junta? Thanks but no thanks...

I recently went to the Golden Triangle this week and thought I would post my opinion about it.

It's too bad its too expensive of a place for the average local Thai people to visit. One place, Hall of Opium was 200 baht. More than a days wages for most in the area.

It reminded me of the Long Neck villages in northern Thailand. It's all about money there. I felt like there was nothing original there.

Tour busses lined the road. Vendors with over priced Thai goods everwhere as well.

It was dissappointing. Oh well....at least I can say I have been to the Golden Triangle.

So Limbo, you are don't like Americans with a capitlal A huh--OK. :D

It is an old posting, about one-and-half year ago. I don't remember why I wrote it.

I only can guess :o

Nowadays I don't like dutch people, which is quite strange because I am Dutch myself.

So I make some exceptions (the ones which confirm the rule).

However I do like Thai people, evenso with some exceptions.

Quite strange, but I know a lot of nice Australians as well. Even some nice British.

About the French I am still doubtfull even if some of my best friends are French.

Germans, don't talk me about Germans! In my next life I could be one of them. I learned the language already.

It's a difficult matter, but one day I will make up my mind :D

I hope I didn't offend anyone :D
