I would like to start by making my apologies known to all who may have been offended regarding my comments about the bar girls in my previous post :D

My Samui experiance is one that I will never forget and now that I have recovered from the jet lag I feel I can give you a better review of this amazing island so here goes.

We arrived and got ourselfs a great little resort just outside of the main area in Lamai ( Mira Mare ), My brother came with his his bride and there 2 kids just as a honeymoon break after they got hitched in BK and as I have been waiting to see him finally get hitched I joined them for the wedding and honeymoon from the UK.We arrived via the ferry from Surit Thani and we were dropped off just outside of Churchills Bar and Resturant ( Great Breakfast - well done Dave ) and we made our way toward the hotels when this little girl said stay here it is very good value so off we went and got 3 rooms for 6 nights at 800bht per night per room.

After a couple of beers we arranged for our first trip which was a diving and fishing trip which we went on the second day and it was really good diving and I even caught a fish which is a first for me and the kids caught loads. We took the fish back to the Mira Mare were the cook served them up for our evening meal. We also during our stay went to see the Big Bhudda and waterfalls but most of the time we spent on the beach with the kids as they had never been to the coast before or even flown so the whole holiday was a first for them and I also had to do the Uncle thing and take them on a jet ski a couple of times ( 800bht per hour )which is really good value compared to Europe.

During the night time we went to loads of bars and watched the kick boxing which was loads of fun but I would not argue with the ladie boxers :o . I have listed below why I will come back and why as a travel agent back here in the UK I would happily send anyone out here for a holiday.

1) Great value for money

2) Fantastic Beaches

3) Weather was superb - compared to UK

4) Great trips - did ourselfs and saved plenty of money

5) Good food

6) Great nightlife - something for everyone

7) Family friendly - Lamai

8) Easy to get to from BK

9) Friendly peopl in bars and around with everyone smiling

10) I got to watch the football with no problems.

We had a great time and we will be back very soon and one day I would like to make Samui my home but I will have to wait a couple of years yet for that dream to come to life.Once again I am very sorry to those who were offended by my previous post and I hope this is a better one for you guys to digest. I did have fun and those who are calling Samui as overcrowded need to think that if you live there your are part of the overcrowding problem but as I didn't see it that way all I say is positives about Samui.

well i suppose if you are a tourist samui is a-ok though as a tourist i prefer less crowded/commercialized beaches. i would not want to live on samui though- too much corruption, doesn't attract the best element of people (lots of gangs and drug traffickers in addition to a lot of retirees), too many bar girls, bad roads, dirty beaches...

nice that it has conveniences though. tesco lotus, good restaurants, nightlife all are a plus.

Sorry, your post is just brimming with over-generalizations!

The "gang problem" has been widely adressed and mopped up...

The "war on drugs" is on again (see other posts)

Not everyone wants to live in a "cave" in the forest and one day you might be old and a retiree as well!

I am now situated in the middle of chaweng, if I open my terrace doors in the morning I can hear birds singing!

I go to the beach, sure there are people, but then I don't mind, never alone, always some company... :o

I've seen many changes over the many years I live here, except the traffic on th main road during peak hours... I cant find much wrong.. and yes after all Samui has been developed into a tourist destination, not a "New-Age-Sanctuary"..

In 5 Minutes I can be at the beach or in any form of entertainment, Bar, Restaurant or more sophisticated clubs...and only 15 Minutes ride I have an "entire beach" almost all for my own!

That is the way I see Ko Samui as a long term resident... and still love it!

doesn't attract the best element of people (lots of gangs and drug traffickers in addition to a lot of retirees),

and what is it about retirees that makes them " not the best elements of people"..... is it their white hair that you find so antisocial , or that purple varicose vein on their calf that you find distasteful , or just the fact that they can, after years of work just kick back and enjoy their freedom to the full , whereas you still have to scrabble for a meagre living ducking and diving around your paradise island , although sometimes you make it sound more like a prison.

She doesn't like retirees. She lives on KPG. "Desirables" there are hoardes of white 20-somethings. :o

As for gangs. I have been told by long-timers that KPG is "Mafia Island". Maybe they're both corrupt? Now I guess we can discuss degrees of corruption.

A fine example of how, this time, a very positive Post about our Island can deteriorate so quickly on this Forum...

Thumbs down...

geez you guys are oversensitive... KPG has a lot of the same problems... i should have specified though that the retirees that bother me are package tourists and old men with young bar girls.

where should retired people go if they want a holiday ?

how do they bother you ? whats so bad about a package holiday ?

old men with young girls ?? do the girls complain ? and why should an older man be denied the company of a younger woman ?

Agreed. But you can change that to "any post"

Yeah, you're right. I apologise for contributing to that deterioration.

Not all retirees pick up young bar girls, I for one. And the young bar girls that I have seen are not on a collar and leash. I suppose you could only describe them as leeches.

again, i said specifically retired people on package tours (many of them are imperious and petty and never stop talking, just annoying that they are everywhere)... and old men with young bar girls. because it's creepy. both are free to do what they want, just saying they bother me and that's why i don't like samui. ya'll are free to love it if you want though.

Kind of an 'ageist' statement if you think about it.......a bit like me saying young people on holiday are annoying because many of them get drunk, can't control themselves, are sick everywhere and make a nuisence of themselves.......

Of course many do , many don't.

I just find the whole ageist thing a little tedious and indeed sad. IMHO one of the things that is wrong with today's society is that older people are not given enough respect.

BTW I'm not a retiree myself so my views are in no way influenced by my own age.

whenever samui is mentioned ,its always doom and gloom ,the op had a lot of nice things to say ,but everyone else has just slagged it off .samui isnt for everyone but is for most ,so we lost a few coconut trees to concrete structures ,if it had'nt it would already be a dead island ,if you look around theres still parts of paradise here

Yes there is L B. There are some beautiful spots. But for how long?

There will always be beautiful views, but as to overdevelopment and creepy guys with young girls perhaps we could kill 2 birds with one stone and organise a bunch of farang oldies to be whacked- with some highly publicized articles it might stop a few condo complexes from going ahead.

As a Samui resident of 3 years everyday I go out and am greeted with smiles wherever I go. I know I'm a little shortsighted but I don't see drugdealers ruling the streets or people fearful of walking outside. Go to Los Angeles and you'll really see what it means to have crime out of control in the streets. For me and most people I know here, the quality of life in Samui is the best in the world, wonderful restaurants, walks in the jungle, t-shirt weather 10 months of the year and massages that haven't gone up in price in 7 years. I think my friend from Sydney sums it up well "if the whole world was like koh samui, there'd be no need for heaven.... we'd already be there"

The nickname "girl x" somehowe dont exacly leed my thoughts to a old woman against x-industry. (joking) :D

Girlx, i just dont see why you have to come in with your degrading comments in a thread that is suppose to b possitive about samui? I respect your oppinions, dont get me wrong, but where was the point of this, really? :o:D:D

Anyway, to op: Thanks for the positive opening post, i liked it and agreed on many things. :D

I think my comments about a bar girl which I named may have offended people and on reflection it was a poor post written before I had chance to get any sleep. After 5 days back in grim UK Samui seems an age away and I can't wait to come back.

It was not offensive, just against forum rules.
