My first car was an (1) Austin 1100 which I purchased from my Mother just before taking my driving test back in 1977.

After I smashed that up I brought a (2) Fiat 124 also from my Mother (as payment terms were very favourable)

I sold that after a few months in favour of an (3)Opel Manta Mk1. Now that was a sexy looking car!

I painted the thing up, got it vinyl roofed (a must in the early 80's) and pinstriped it to the max.

In the end both vehicles 1 and 3 were written off due to accidents. Both accidents were not heavy, it was corrosion damage that took its toll as when the accidents happened the body panels were reduced to piles of rusty flakes.

During these early days I had my eye always on the Triumph Stag, but alas it was not to be as the insurance for a lad in his early twenties as either too expensive or unattainable.

If (like me) you don't have your own original pics of the cars you owned you can find a good selection in Google Images.

I only ever had one car that was my very own as I left the US right after Uni.

I bought a used 1976 BMW 2002. It was zippy, it was great on the gas mileage, it had a sun roof and it beat everyone out at the light. I had it painted British racing green.

This is not my car, but the same year

Loved that little car!

My first car was a Volvo PV 444 from 1952. A black one with no brakes bought for small money. Then I bought a pretty new Saab 96 which later was replaced by a real beauty, BMW 501 from 1956. I have a lot of memories from my different cars – good to think about when nothing else to do.

Well, I must say that ALL of you have great taste in cars. (Hmmm. Not to sure about that Austin 1100 but as I passed my test in one I mustn't grumble).

No pics, I'm afraid, but my first 3 were:

Ford Anglia 105E (light and quick but very tail-end happy, the cause of it's early demise and very nearly mine too).

Austina A40 Farina Mk 11 (sensationally good car, arguably the world's first hatchback, styled by Michelotti, handled like a dream on Pirelli Cinturatos and could have used a lot more power. In fact if BMC/BL/BMH/B-USELESS hadn't lost the plot completely it could have grown to be a 2-litre, 5 door family world beater).

Ford Cortina GT Mk 1 (a lot of car - and realistic power - for your money, MUCH safer than the Anglebox and a back seat quite big enough for a bachelor, wink-wink).

What did I aspire to and never achieve? Why, a Mk 1 Lotus Cortina of course!

Couldn't afford one new, same-same when they were at their cheapest, same-same when they joined the classic ranks, same-same now!! Some things never change.

Nice thread. Let's have more!

Sorry to interrupt your thoughts (wishes you had 'em all now, eh?) but MUST tell you a true story about a wonderful PV544 (I think), just like the 444 but with a one piece screen, yes?

Always always wanted one and in the late 80's negotiated an 8 mile drive in one. LHD, vertical wheel, long throw gear change, quite a bit of body roll but cornered very well. Just drove like a dream and felt strong as a tank.

When I took it back to its home the owner listened to me enthusing. "Any criticisms?" he asked. "Well, I thought it might have accelerated just a bit better" I admitted.

Silently he walked to the rear and opened the boot.

Sitting there was the spare engine!!

PS: I think Volvo Thailand still has an immaculate black 444 they exhibit sometimes.

Nice thread and some nice cars...

My first three were a Citroen GS, 1977 I think. I loved it and it was fab except for breaking down whenever it wanted. My second was another Citroen. A Dyane, a 2cv made a bit more 'posh' It had a good radio. And my third - well, everyones had one - a mini. I did love the mini and did some of the fastest most dangerous driving of my life! Oh happy days!

1964 Chevrolet Corvair Spyder convertible, with factory turbo

sbk's1976 BMW2002 was also my daughter's first car, basically a graduation present for earning a BA cum laude. Hers was also British Racing Green.

i loved those old vauxhall victors , wraparound windshield , tail fins ... sort of , hooded headlamps etc.

brought a bit of much needed flashy americana onto dour 60's british streets.

my first few cars were

1.

mini , wonderful car

2.

vw beetle , another wonderful car

3.

peugeot 304 convertible , rubbish

4.

best car i have ever owned , (apart from the constant repairs necessary)

5.

renault 12 , much better than it looks

6.

e-type jaguar , awful car. sold it after a week.

i always wanted a lotus elan , but never bought one , i bought a triumph tr6 instead which proved very unreliable and hence unenjoyable to own.

1961 Hillman Minx, bought for £20 at 15 and did it up, past my drivers test in it 2 days after I turned 17..

Next a white 1956 Armstrong Siddeley 346 pre select, followed by a 2 tone Green 4lt Star. followed by another Star in brown..

Then lots of Citroens... but still bought cheap cars to do up
