I would love to sell you a Suzuki DR-Z400SM, and if you can wait some time I will. But you can also contact RedBaron.

The price, which Extreme Bike is asking for the Suzuki DR-Z400SM is indeed EXTREME (they keep there word, extreme biking). The DR-Z400SM cost about 190,000 Baht if you buy it offshore, importing somewhere from 20 to 40,000 Baht. And register the bike in Thailand another 40,000 Baht

That makes a total of 270,000 Baht, give the dealer also some chips say 10 to 30,000 Baht and the bike is yours for 300,000 Baht (brand new, 2008 model.....)

If I may quote something from GTRider website, I wonder how accurately this summarizes BIG BIKE ownership in Thailand:

"Sorry to hear about your loses Brutale?Zen Fred the Motozone ripoff saga is another sorry story in the annals of BIG BIKE business in Thailand.

Siam Superbike

wranglers

Motozone

and the people who are having problems with Siam racing :no books after 2 years and no customs papers so no registration possible and no refunds either."

Okay, so maybe I'm a wuss to insist on driving legal small bikes in Thailand. Honestly, I don't want to spend big bucks just to get 111 horsepower to go to the market or the countryside. But the headaches do not seem worth it.

There was once a time that importing a motorcycle into Thailand was a freaking nightmare, but lucky times change things.

The cheapest way to get a bigger motorcycle into Thailand is by importing it from Australia, Thailand and Australia have a Free Trade Agreement; and this FTA went into force on 1 January 2005.

Thailand immediately eliminated tariffs on large passenger motor vehicles (engine capacity of over 3000cc) and goods vehicles, previously at 80% and 60% respectively. For other passenger motor vehicles, Thailand immediately reduced the previous 80% tariff to 30%, before phasing this down by 6% each year to zero in 2010.

Currently the import duty, for example on a Suzuki DR-Z400, is 18%.

For people who look for aftermarket motorcycle parts I say look down under… exhaust systems for prices you would not belief

Import Duty of 200% ?? Still belief in Santa Claus also?

Below is a quote taken from the website of thailand customs.

Example Calculation of Taxes and Duties

CIF value of the imported vehicle and applicable taxes and duties are as follows:

* CIF value of the import

= 100 Thai Baht

* Import duty

= 80 %

* Excise tax

= 35 %

* Interior tax

= 10 % of excise tax

* VAT

= 7 %

The total import duties and taxes imposed on this import are calculated as follows:

1. Import duty

= (CIF value * Rate of import duty)

= (100 * 0.8)

= 80 Thai Baht

2. Excise tax = (CIF value + import duty) * {Rate of excise tax/1-(1.1 * Rate of excise tax)}

= (100+80) * {0.35/1-(1.1*0.35)}

= 180 * 0.5691057

= 102.439 Thai Baht

3. Interior tax = Excise tax * Rate of interior tax

= 102.439 * 0.1

= 102.439 Thai Baht

4. Base VAT = (CIF value+ Import duty+ Excise tax + Interior tax)

= (100 + 80 + 102.439 + 10.2439)

= 292.6829 Thai Baht

5. VAT = Base VAT * VAT Rate

= 292.6829 *0.07

= 20.4878 Thai Baht

Total taxes and duties = 1 + 2 + 3 + 5 = 213.171 Thai Baht

Type of Vehicles

1. The total taxes and duties of a motor vehicle and motorcycle = Customs duty + excise tax + interior tax + 7% of VAT

If you want to look it up yourself.

thailand customs

Just went looking for the thai-australia free trade agreement (TAFTA).It only applies for goods origin australia or thailand and the 0 % tarrif only can be achieved when every part of the imported item is from australian origin.Let us know how a japanese suzuki ever can be considered origin australia :o

Does that 18% number work for Australian second hand vehicles ??

The import duty is only zero in 2010, the import duty on a motorcycle manufactured in Australia is currently 18%. And who says that the Suzuki DR-Z400 is made in Japan?

Anyway Thailand and Japan have a very similar trade agreement.

I currently work for a company who, probably, will not like it if I start trading Suzuki motorcycles. Therefore as I wrote in one of my earlier posting, I need some time, probably around 3 months before I can get involved.

Second, you need to understand that I only act as a trade agent and payment is by an irrevocable letter of credit which may also be transferable.
