Low-cost Nissan launched

BANGKOK: -- Siam Nissan Automobile Co outlined its product policy yesterday, with a focus on car segmentation this year to push sales and boost the brand's image, according to Koji Okuda, senior vice-president for marketing and sales. The launch of Tiida Latio four-door sedan yesterday was part of the company's product strategy.

''Last year was an excellent year for us, with an overall result that turned out positively, especially in the pickup segment,'' Mr Okada said at the launch.

''At the same time, we also saw an improvement in our cars but we are still eager to improve and expand in order to meet our goal of satisfying Nissan customers to the fullest.''

The introduction of the Latio as the four-door sedan in the Tiida car line is seen as an effort to recapture customers who want value and have high expectations for a family car.

A company source said the Tiida made its debut in 2004 but both the hatchback and sedan versions had received a lukewarm response from customers, despite its premium quality, roomy interior and good fuel economy and performance.

The company decided to re-launch the Tiida in 2007 by repositioning it between the compact Toyota Vios or Honda Civic and the rival subcompact Toyota Vios/Yaris or Honda City/Jazz models. The move prompted Nissan to bring down Tiida prices, said the source.

For 2008, Mr Okuda said the company had decided to separate the marketing plan for the Tiida hatchback from the sedan because the target customers are different. The hatchback model continues to be called Nissan Tiida while the sedan will be popularised as the Tiida Latio.

''We are confident that with our individual sales and marketing plans, we will be able to reach our target customers while at the same time they will gain better understanding of our products through new communications and activities,'' he said.

The prices for the Tiida Latio start from 554,000 baht for the new 1.6-litre model in both manual and automatic transmissions.

They go up to 715,000 baht for the top 1.6-litre automatic model.

I am thinking to buy this cheap version. Any advice?

still not cheap enough to cut in potential buyers of vios, city, yaris and jazz... IMO

I think it is cheaper than a vios and has a larger motor?

yes a point bigger motor but how would that compare with toyota's VVt and Honda's Vtec?

and Toyota and Honda's:

resale value?

parts and service?

i do like Nissan's though but still think the Latio's should have been priced a bit lower for more market penetration. The Navara's on the other hand compete well with the toyota's and Isuzu's. :o lovely trucks..

Assuming what the Bangkok Post really wanted to write was "between the Toyota Altis or Honda Civic and the rival subcompact Vios/Yaris or City/Jazz models". oh well.

But really, when will Nissan ever find a clue? At first they tried to tell people that it was a rival to Altis/Civic. That was wishful thinking at best, but actually more like a blatant lie. Now they want to reposition it in between..

When will they realize that it's NOT going to be successful unless they make it CHEAPER than Vios/Yaris/City/Jazz?? (or match the price at the very least) And if they can't do that then they will have some soul searching to do and fire whoever it was that decided that this tiny vehicle should have a 1.6 liter engine. Honestly.

Well, it's not cheaper because Vios starts at 499,000 baht. (Source: http://www.toyota.co.th/en/models/Vios/vio...asp?series_id=6 ) And if that wasn't crushing enough to Nissan, the AUTOMATIC box version starts at 543,000 baht.

Bigger engine.. Well it has exactly the same horsepower output as the Vios. Sure the vehicle is 10 cm longer (though less wide) than Vios. Seeing Nissan is behind they need to either be cheaper, or offer more for the same price. They simply have to match Toyota at 499,000 or they're dead in the water.

hel_l, they're already dead in the water now that the new Honda Jazz is out... Man is that thing gonna selllll and sellll and sell.

Hey thanks for that! I may end up with a vios although Nissan have offered a good trade in price on my Sunny.
