danielg
Hi there everybody, Firstly, What a great forum ! I am having a nightmare trying to sell a new bike i just bought in Australia, i am hopefully moving to Thailand in a few months and just wondered if its a good idea to try and import a motorbike. I had hassle with Tax and Duty in Oz so i just wondered what pitt falls there are in Thailand regarding importing. The bike is near new and i just cant get rid of it so it may have to come with. How much of a hassle is it to register a new bike? Any ideas? Thanks.

xbusman
No problem if it fits in your carry on. If its a bit big, try one of those monster trash compactors to get it into about a 1 foot cube and that should do the trick.
apetley
150% import duty on the value thai customs put on your bike. Do a search and you will see it just isn't worth it unless you have connections with Royalty or someone in Government.
imaneggspurt
speaking as someone that tried it id advise against it, the paperwork and figures you will be quoted are meaningless, cut your losses and sell it where it is,
LivinLOS
Dont forget though.. While legal import and gaining a Thai registration is very tough its pretty trivial to bring it in as a temporary import. When you do this they clear it in for a month or two then you go to your local customs house and extend that up to 6 months.. then you visa run it. I know many guys here on Phuket that have thier home country bikes still on thier home country plates and I am toying with the idea myself. If your near a border or if you expect to be taking short bike vacations every 6 months and dont mind some moderate hassle, it make a lot of sense.
