Train is more comfortable for sure.

However, you can take the bus to Chumporn and then jump on the Lompraya ferry which takes you to Phangan over Koh Tao without stopping on Samui.

Seatran do a VIP bus from Khoa san Rd BKK to Chumphon then ferry to KPG. Costs around 7-800 baht. Other way is to get the sleeper train to Chumphon then walk round the corner to Fame tours and get a ferry ticket and breakfast there which includes free transfer to pier. Ferry leaves at 0700 and the train arrives Chumphon at around 0430. :o

Keeping in mind, of course, that's it's a public holiday on the 17th and 18th so the full moon party is unlikely to be on the full moon. Hopefully someone else can confirm the date
