Hi to all,

I would like to legalize the US Birth Certificate of my daugther for UAE use. Can I do it here with the UAE Embassy in Bangkok? The Birth Certificate is already legalized by the US State Department. I have received mixed replies. Some suggested to legalize the documents first by the US Embassy here before going to the UAE Embassy, but the US Embassy declined to do so. Did anybody had to do similar procedure with a different country here in Thailand?

Your reply is highly appreciated.

Thank you.

I guess I don't fully understand your term of legalizing the birth.

I mean, I just recently applied (four weeks ago) and received a Non-O (married to a Thai) visa here in Chiang Mai less than a week ago. When I applied for this visa I had to show a birth certificate of my daughter (who was born in the USA). I provided an original certified copy that I received in the USA when my daughter was born. This was not good enough for the Thai Immigration folks. So I had to go to the USA Consulate here in CM and fill out an affidavite stating that my daughter was born in the USA (where in the USA) and on what date. I signed this affidavite, paid the fee to the USA Consulate, raised my right hand and and swore that the information I provided on the affidavite was true, then it was stamped by the Consulate as being certified.

I then took that to the Thai Immigration and they were 'fat happy campers'.... Visa provided... :o

Consular officials at the UAE embassy in Thailand can't help, neither can the US embassy. The birth certificate needs to be legalised by a UAE official who recognises the authentication of the US State Department, and that's a consular official at the UAE embassy in Washington.

Cost is US$30 and they accept applications by mail:

As to Poster 3, he doesn't have a legalised birth certificate, but a sworn affidavit attesting to the birth, which the Thai official was willing to accept. Legalisation is a very formal procedure involving a chain of officials, each official authenticating the prior authentication.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. taxout is spot on. My line of thinking was that the UAE Embassy in Thailand would recognize the seal from its US conterpart, which in turn obviously would recognize the Department of State's seal and could put something on the document stating so. I wanted to avoid the hassle of mailing the document to the UAE Embassy in USA as it requires a payment by check and a pre-paid self addressed envelope which I don't know technically how to do it from here in Thailand. But, I guess that's another question of how to send a pre-paid self addressed envelope to USA from Thailand...

Thanks again.
