Hi,

I'm a Malaysian and have been staying here for 2 years already. I'm married to a Thai and have a son who has Thai citizenship.

Now, after my yearly visa expired recently, I went to renew it for another year. BUT when I receive the visa, I was only given up to the date my passport expired.

I will be changing to a new passport in a few months time as I need to have at least 6months passport validity in order to enter other countries.

My question is: can I still use the visa that is stamp in my old passport? I know that for US visa (I have a 10year visa), as long as the immigration department doesn't cut it, I can still use it with my new passport. What about Thai visa?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a visa (90 day entry) issued by a Consulate or a one year extension of stay from Immigration that you are talking about?

If a multi entry visa you will be allowed to use in old passport until it expires.

If a one year extension of stay (shortened to your passport validity) it will be transferred into your new passport and suspect for the full one year period that it would normally be.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a one year extension visa (this would be my 3rd year).

You mentioned that if this is the case, it will be transferred to my new passport - do I need to get it re-stamp in the new passport? or use the one in the old passport when I apply for re-entry permit?

Thanks

Info needs to be entered into the new passport - and if you do not need a re-entry permit immediately I would wait as after it is in new passport the re-entry permit will be valid until that date - not sure if they would change if in old passport for another date.

Get new passport.

Go to immigration with both old (invalidated) and new passport.

They will stamp everything in your new passport, and in one go will extend your stay up to the full year.

Re-entry permit will be transferred over as well if you already have one.

They do not stamp a visa in a new passport - visas are a Consular function. They move an extension of stay or re-entry permit or a permitted to stay stamp. There is no charge but there is a short form to fill out and copies of passports to be submitted.

ok, one more question: if I were to go back to Malaysia and get my new passport, when I re-enter Thailand, I can show the re-entry permit from the old passport, right? or will I get "stuck" or get a 30day visa stamp in new passport when I'm at the airport immigration?

I'm still debating as to whether to apply for a single or multiple re-entry permit as I will be going to Malaysia this coming Sept :o

I expect entry with a new passport on a re-entry permit might be more trouble than I would want but if that is your only option guess you will have to try. I would not buy more than a single entry. If you can obtain new passport from Embassy I would do so are there is a clear game plan for that process.
