Texting Is A Social Disease

Featured Replies

I am fed up with texting!! I see people doing it all day, with the thumbs twighting like tool video and reducing the English language down to codes, LOL <deleted> and all those. College level professors have to tell froshmen that when the write a paper it must be in English not tecxt code. Oh My God, yes I spelled it out.

In middle of talking to someone 'Hold on, I have a text." WHAT?! Texting in class and while driving, just heard for someone who comes into the store I work at the the family truck is totaled because the driver was TEXTING!

So, who agrees with me?

:D AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! Eek!!! I can't even read this. What the h3ll are you saying? It looks kinda like German. :o

Sorry, but I love text messages. It's great to get one, especially when bored. Also good when you don't want to make a call, or when you need to giv short messages like, "I'm at Topps, see you in five. Need anything?

or maybe it says,

"Sad Old western Englishman, but I want your Butt & textured mAssages. It's great to get one, ... a

Ahh. fuggedaboutit.

I hate decoding messages like that.

I've noticed people do it on IRC chat's, Instant messagers, even on email, sometimes.

It's a downright pain in the arse.

Stick to proper English I say.

When I text, which is seldom, I use proper long worded English, punctuation and all. When people send me those 'gr8 2 hr frm u' <deleted> I haven't got a clue what they are on about!

I wouldn't ban it - just improve it. :o

I used to text all the time when I was in the Philippines, it's almost a religion over there.

Thais don't seem to do it nearly as much, I suppose the alphabet isn't really text-able.

It's certainly a cheap way of sending someone a quick message if you don't have internet access.

I think I must be close to achieving arhat-hood in this incarnation, none of that trivial sh!t bothers me anymore. :o

No, it just means you aren't forced to sit next to them as the giggle and type.

Glad it gave you a laugh eek. I often pass my phone to my wife and say "what are they on about?"

I agree 100% social disease.

I've seen goups of young people come into a bar or restaurant and sit down and immediately all start texting. Why do they do this? If they are texting friends why can it not be done before a social gathering? So much of life's education comes from social interaction and conversation and they are missing out on this important skill.

Like Tigs, when I text I use the English language, capitals where required and punctuation. So it takes a few minutes more, nothing to worry about but then most of my text messages are usually short and sharp "Beer tonight?" answer "Thao Mai's 7pm". :o

If I have anything more to say I'll telephone.

If it can be said, phone instead! :o

My nephew was placed on academic probation at university last year, in the first semester of his freshman year. He followed through in the second semester by getting thrown out due to poor academic achievement. One day while my brother was pondering the $25k dollars he'd just thrown down the drain, he happened upon the boy's cell phone. It seems the young lad was averaging just over 100 text messages per day. I believe he's sleeping on a friend's sofa now, while he ponders on why his dad is being such a dick.

Since the boy was known to sleep about 12 hours per day, that would be a texting rate of one every 7 minutes, ALL DAY LONG! Maybe there's a Guiness angle my brother can work to get his tuition money back.

Chop their fekkin thumbs off. That'll do it :D

Even my mother has started to do it :o When someone texts me, i can't be ar5ed so i call em back.

Hint Mr BoJ

You can type the word 'arsed' in here...... it's not an Americanism, so the profanity filter doesn't pick it up.

Agree with you tho' .... if I get an SMS from someone.... I just call them.

Every once in a while my cel phone makes "blup blup" sound. It's either a text message or an ad. I don't know, as I never bother checking. Call me if you need me.

I use SMS text quite often - simple and easy to use. I do use full English or Thai depending on the circumstances and who is going to receive the message. I don't bother with full stops but do use capitals to start new sentences and proper names etc.

Sometimes it is much more convenient compared to voice. Afterall effectively we are all using a form of texting on this forum, so if it is better to use voice why aren't we telephoning eachother?

Give me your number, I'll be in touch... :o

When you are on your own, txting is also a great way of avoiding strange men (or women), as when you notice they are making a bee-line for you you can busy yourself with the mobile (but calls also work with that one too..probably better in fact..so nvm). But..also its great if you have a blind date and you are not enjoying the company. Can send a pre-written message to your friend, who knows that means "call me with an excuse to leave!"(no personal experience of this one tho :D)

Anyway, i love txted msgs. Especially MMS ones. A picture can say a thousand words :o

Yes, texting is a sign of the End of Days.

OK. Hands up anyone that has written a letter long hand (pen and paper not PC) in the past year? ...last five years?

(Not including in birthday cards etc.)

For me I think it was between 7 & 10 years ago.

I recall visiting people, and others visiting my family, with holiday pictures being passed around. Does that happen these days, sign of the times?

That's an interesting post Cuban. I can't remember writing a 'proper' letter in the past decade. And it's true about photos, most people pass around a camera or an i-phone to show their snaps.

The world has changed...

Well, I dunno if this counts, but at Christmas time, I always send a card with a long letter attached to some relatives im not so close to and to my ex's mum and grandmother, as a catch up. Even though they have email. I think hand written letters are more personal and touching than an email.

I think its a balance really. Sending news via snail mail seems so archaic for regular everyday stuff, or business. I think email is better for things like that as its instant and doesnt get lost in transit. I use the telephone when i need to hear the sound of someones voice, or need some instant feedback on something. Txt great for when you dont want to disturb or be disturbed, to pass on some info, and when you dont need an instant reply. sms is great when a pic is needed, or for a bit of fun. And not forgetting yim, skype and msn etc, when i want to catch up with friends and family, or make free calls. Hand written letters and cards only when I want to be personal, intimate, etc.

I think we are lucky to have such a variety of ways to communicate. All we need to do is choose the most appropriate one to suit the situation.

It certainly shouldn't be done whilst driving or using machinery! :o

Indeed that is the point, he was texting - not driving (if that is the word used to encompass controlling a train). Would you read a newspaper while swiming or do your ironing while rock climbing. You know what I mean. :o
