Help With Choosing The Correct Visa

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

My situation is that i want to live in Thailand with my wife (a thai citizen) who has been living in the USA with me for the past year.

My schedule will be that I work outside of thailand for a month then have a month off which i plan on spending in thailand.

What Visa do i need? Is it legal for me to just obtain the "entry on arrival visa" over say a 2 year period?

Thanks in advance from a newbie! :o

I assume you hold a p/port that allows you to enter without a visa, so it should be ok.

This visa excempted stay for max. 30 days is for tourists, only. After each stay you are gone for 1 month, which makes you a perfect tourist, contrary to the guys who return same day.

I would advise the multi entry non immigrant O visa as it will not cost that much and last about 13 months before you need another.  You have more flexibility with that then the entry without visa.

If your stays are going to be 5 or 6 weeks at a time.....the above would be the way to go....as Lopburi says it would give you more flexibility.

I would go further and suggest the Non Imm O visa and get the extension for marriage.

I realise it is not essential, but you never know when your plans may change.

Once you have the yearly extension you can get the multi re-entry permit and come and go as you wish.

You will also start clocking up years which can contribute to a residence permit later.

I see three problems with that but agree it is worth consideration:

1. He will never be here long enough (60 days) to apply - so it would have to be a special case.

2. He will likely not be able to arrange to be here on date it must be renewed - again would have to be a special case and probably now a pain. :o

3. Unlikely he would/could obtain PR with overseas job from what has been posted.

Lopburi is confused again.

1. 60 days is utter nonsense. You can request an extension from 90 days to 12 months at any time (e.g the day you arrive in the Thailand) however you will need to report back to immigration on or around 30 days as the request based on marriage is referred to Ministry of Foreign affairs.

2. How do you know

3. CORRECT but for the wrong reason. A conditon of residency is providing Thai tax records for the previous 3 years

Apologies to Lopburi. I did misunderstand his point about 60 days.

However Tuffy appears to reside in the USA at the moment.

US and other western consulates can issue 12 month multi entries on basis of marriage.

The LA web site is out of date (I do't know about other sites - can't b bothered to look).

Another option is to enter on a 3 or 6 month multi entry tourist visa and apply within Thailand to change to Marriage visa. There is absolutely no reason why one cannot exit the country whilst the application is being considered. Simply AGREE a date on which you must return. EASY
